Coimbatore Passsport Office Created Record
The Coimbatore Passport Office has created a record of sorts by issuing more than 10,250 passports within 100 days of its opening. The office started functioning from September 15. Of the 100 days, more than 60 days were working days. Passport Officer B. Balamurugan told that the office had received 18,486 applications till date of which 10,250 passports were issued. Of the total number of applications processed, nearly 25 per cent was tatkal category applications.
Mr.Balamurugan said that the number of applications received for fresh passport was 9,100 and the number of passports issued was 4,700. With regard to renewal of passports the number of applications received was 2,500 and passports issued was 1,650. The number of applications received in respect of passports for children was 1,250 and the number of passports issued was 975.
The number of applications forwarded by the District Passport Cells in Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris was 3,800 of which 1,300 passports had already been issued. There had been procedural delay in the issue of fresh passports. The passport office was constantly in touch with the Police Commissioners of Salem, Coimbatore and Superintendents of Police of all the five districts at regular intervals to expedite the process of police verification, he said. The Coimbatore Passport Officer, B. Balamurugan, has announced that the Passport office in Coimbatore would remain closed on Thursday on account of Christmas.
