The Textiles Committee will offer consultancy to textile units on adopting new standards such as ISO 2008. Member Secretary of the committee Pradeep Gupta told here on Tuesday that the committee was offering quality consultancy since the early 1990s. Organising workshops and sensitisation programmes would help the industry, he said. The committee was also a facilitator for certain clusters to obtain Geographical Indicator status. With assistance for documentation, forming consortium and applying for the registration, the clusters that make textiles and handicrafts would be able to get the GI registration. The committee and the UNCTAD had facilitated GI registration for five textile products. The committee had now written to the State Governments for identification of textile products that could get the registration.
With regard to technical textiles, he said the committee had held talks with some technical people in this sector. The Union Ministry of Textiles had already established centres of excellence. Depending on the need of the industry, the committee could also extend its assistance. The committee had accredited laboratories across the country for quality testing – both regulatory and optional. It also provided general system of preference certificate to exporters. Currently, the committee was working with three handloom clusters in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
