Coimbatore CII Launched TQM Forum

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore Zone, will launch a Total Quality Management (TQM) forum here on Tuesday. Jairam Varadaraj, convenor of the manufacturing panel of the CII, Coimbatore and S.C. Sarkar, co-convenor of the panel, told presspersons here on Monday that the forum would start with about 40 members and the number was expected to go up. The initiative would help the units that were practising TQM share their knowledge and experiences and it would encourage more units to adopt these methods. Monthly meetings and plant visits would be some of the activities of the forum. The units practised different TQM tools (5S, Six Sigma, etc) now.

“The biggest problem is not knowledge about the tools but discipline of execution on a sustained-basis,” Mr. Varadaraj said. Though many units started implementing the tools, a number of them gave up these initiatives when they were not able to succeed initially. These units should be encouraged to continue the practices, sustain and improve. The forum would help build their confidence, he said.

Similar forums were operational at Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Puducherry and Mumbai. TQM was applicable for all sectors. Coimbatore was a manufacturing hub and it would benefit the industries here. With the economic slowdown, the units were forced to look at improving quality and reducing costs. The forum would look at the tools required for these, he said.
