A walk to stress environment protection

Members of Parampariyam, an organisation that promotes traditional methods of production that do not harm the environment, began here on Monday a walk to Poompuhar in Nagapattinam District to stress concerted efforts to protect the Earth.

Issues such as global warming, pollution of water resources and the impact such as damage to marine ecology, poor rainfall and slump in agricultural production will be highlighted throughout the more than 550 km walk, led by Muthu Murugan of Parampariyam. The Tamil Nadu Natural Resources Protection Movement, Tamil Ilaignar Mandram are among the organisations supporting the walk.

Effluents

Mr. Murugan said in a release that effluents from tanneries, dyeing units and nuclear plants were polluting water resources. In cities with a huge population, sewage was let into small rivers or canals. This led to the pollution of ground water. It was important that people avoided activities that harmed the environment and thereby threatened their very existence.
