Coimbatore is getting ready for Feb-24 visits

Coimbatore: Arrangements are in full swing for the scheduled visit of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Governor Surjith Singh Barnala and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on February 24.
The President will take part in the second International Conference of Pharmaceutical Sciences Technology and Practice at Udhagamandalam and visit the Defence Staff Service College (DSSC) at Wellington near Coonoor on Saturday morning. He will also interact with the students from schools and colleges in the Nilgiris district.


The Governor will accompany the President. Dr. Kalam will arrive at Bharathiar University by a chopper after lunch, where he will take part in a function to confer the title Bharathi Tamil Chemmal on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the varsity. Governor S.S. Barnala will preside over the function and release the souvenir to be received by the President.


The President will hand over the 5-lakh books (collected by the students) to the Chief Minister for distribution to the 234 rural libraries in Erode, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts. The Chief Minister will honour the great grandson of Bharathiar, Rajkumar Bharathi and release three books on Bharathi besides inaugurating two new buildings built at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. He will lay the foundation stone for six buildings to be built at a cost of Rs. 15 crore. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran will release the first postal cover and the President will receive it. State Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi and Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy will take part.


At a different function to be held at a different venue within the varsity, Dr. Kalam will distribute free callipers to polio-affected persons, largely students, and interact with them. In another function in the varsity premises, Dr. Kalam will interact with hundreds of students from in and around Coimbatore.


Later, the President will leave by road to South Indian Textile Research Association (SITRA) on Avanashi Road for the inauguration of Golden Jubilee celebrations and after a night halt Dr. Kalam will leave Coimbatore on Sunday.


The Chief Minister on his arrival on Saturday morning will attend the Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launch function to be held at the VOC Park Grounds at 10 a.m., wherein he will lay the foundation for various schemes.
After attending the Bharathiar University function after lunch, he will leave Coimbatore the same night. In view of the visits of the VVIPs, a tight security cordon will be thrown around Coimbatore city, Bharathiar University, Airport, SITRA and VOC Park areas from Friday evening. Additional police reinforcements will be mobilised from the neighbouring districts for stepping up security.
