Renovation of the bus stand is nearing completion

A private firm has been given the task of turning around what was once an eyesore in the heart of the city. The bus stand was actually a shelter for beggars and was even used as a public toilet.Now, a toilet with granite flooring, wall tiles and even western closets has been built. It is being provided with solar water heaters so that relatives of people admitted to the hospital can have a bath by paying a fee that will have to be approved by the Corporation.The stand will be washed and cleaned every night. The firm has already engaged six persons who are cleaning the stand and the Tiruchi Road stretch from Lanka Corner to the St. Mary’s School. An arch with the name of the stand is to be put and a traffic island will be built. South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil and officials of the Corporation inspected the stand on Thursday. Mayor R. Venkatachalam said that the works were expected to be over in 15 days. The Corporation would install a high mast lamp at Rs. 6.5 lakh.
