Coimbatore industy to set up 1000 MW Power plant !

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Coimbatore and the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore supported by 110 other trade and industry associations and NGOs are mulling options to set up a 1,000 MW power plant in coastal Tamil Nadu. This will help ease the power crisis for industries in the Coimbatore region.

Expressing concern over the district being neglected in the development process for several decades, the members of the consortium of associations said the detailed study on the power plant, including the location is going on now.

The consortium also released a 10 point agenda to improve roads, housing for slum dwellers, railway, healthcare, water bodies, urban infrastructure, electricity and airport.Mr CR Swaminathan president of RAAC said that Coimbatore is counted as one of the top 20 centres of economic activity in the country since it leads in textile, textile machinery, castings, auto components, paper, jewellery, pump and poultry feeds.

Despite this region contributing more than INR 3,500 crore revenues to the exchequer and earning over INR 25,000 crore as foreign exchange it is neglected by the State and Centre for several years.
