Facelift to Huzur Road
Huzur Road in Coimbatore is set to get good pavements as part of a facelift to the entire stretch.The Coimbatore Corporation may soon come out with plans for facelift to Huzur Road, one of the main roads in the city.Measures will include new pavements, improvements to the geometry of the traffic junctions/islands, storm water drainage and streetlights, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Friday. “Corporation South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil has called for the preparation of estimates for these works so that problems for the public are eliminated soon,” the Mayor said.The Chairman and officials accompanied the Mayor on an inspection of the entire stretch – from Avanashi Road to the City Police Commissioner’s office.The Mayor said the pavements had disappeared at various places. They were level with the road and this had led to their getting converted into parking lots.With vehicles parked on what should actually be footpath, pedestrians were forced to walk on the road and run the risk of accidents.
A number of private buildings, commercial establishments and Government buildings were located along this road.The office of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the office of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, a conference hall, a police station, a taluk office and the Commissioner’s office are all located on this stretch. The Combined Court Complex can also be entered through a gate on this road.The Mayor said that lawyers met him during the inspection and told him that there was no pavement near the court for nearly 25 years.
They also wanted good storm water drains so that pedestrian and vehicle movement were not affected during rain.They made a fervent plea for good pedestrian pathways, as the court area was a junction with heavy bus traffic.Mr. Venkatachalam said everyone could see that there was no pavement along the court’s compound wall. The space meant for it was also turned into a parking lot.
