Corp Set An Example

The Coimbatore Corporation will try and set an example in its efforts to rid the city of non-biodegradable and non-recyclable plastics. At a meeting of its environment protection committee on Tuesday, the Corporation took a decision not to use plastic water bottles and other items on its premises, especially during meetings. Mayor R. Venkatachalam, who heads the committee, made this announcement when it was pointed out that drinking water was provided in plastic bottles at meetings.
Sensitise people to the dangers posed to environment by plastics

The meeting took stock of the efforts being taken by the Corporation to sensitise people to the dangers posed to environment by plastics. The committee said it would take a couple of days for the gazette notification on the ban to be issued. The ban would come into effect in a month from the issue of the notification. Till then, the Corporation would carry out all forms of awareness drives on the ill-effects of plastics. It would have more meetings with traders, owners or marriage halls and caterers to impress upon them the need to shun plastics.
