Terming the announcement of power holiday during summer in Tamil Nadu, as a 'step in the right direction,' Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) said the industry was ready to cooperate on the decision provided the Government ensured proper management of power supply without interruptions on remaining six days.TNEB should reduce the demand charges proportionately
Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) should reduce the demand charges proportionately for the holiday and also extend the banking facility beyond March 31 for the wind power and enable the mills to exhaust their units fully during the next year and avoid any lapse in the wind power generated, SIMA Chairman, Dr K V Srinivasan said.The division of State into six regions and introducing one day holiday in rotation for each region might enable TNEB to supply power without interruption to the textile industry.
SIMA's proposal on running the idle capacity of furnace oil based captive power plants has not materialized so far due to impractical methods and technical issues suggested by TNEB.There are around 25 textile units having furnace oil based captive power plants, which could generate 100 MW of power and help in bridging the demand supply gap and easing out the problems considerably, he said.TNEB can install necessary meters and harvest around 100 MW from these units and another 100 MW from other industries, he said adding the proposal if implemented would enable to partially meet the power shortage not only this year, but also for the future till the demand was fully met during the summer period, Srinivasan said.
