Give Priority To Safety In Buildings
All buildings visited by the public, such as shopping complexes, had been asked to provide all safety measures
Corporation Commissioner V.K. Shanmugham said in a press release that all buildings visited by the public, such as shopping complexes, had been asked to provide all safety measures. Buildings that compromised the safety of the public in terms of fire-fighting equipment or fire escape were pulled up and asked to provide these. Structures that were unsafe had been demolished in joint actions by the Corporation and the Local Planning Authority. The process of identifying and removing such structures was on for two years. As a result, many owners had taken efforts to provide fire-safety measures, parking space and also to strengthen buildings.
The Corporation and the planning authority had set out on this drive following complaints of building rule violations that comprised safety norms. The non-provision of the mandatory parking space that led to congestion on roads was a major grouse among the public. But, the Corporation noted with concern that there were a number of buildings that did not conform to safety norms. There could some such buildings that had not come to the notice of the Corporation.
The Commissioner said in the release that the owners of these building should immediately have all safety measures in place. If it was not possible for them to do it, they could demolish the structures after informing the Corporation. But, in the meanwhile, the owners should not allow the public to enter these buildings as this could be risky for them. The release also said that the Corporation would continue with the drive against unsafe structures.
