Safe Eye Surgery

Femtosecond laser makes lasik eye surgery precise, safe and effective, according to eye surgeon and Director of The Eye Foundation D. Ramamurthy. Explaining the functions of a new equipment that ensured precision and safety, Dr. Ramamurthy told presspersons here on Tuesday that lasik involved two procedures. One was the creation of a flap using a metallic microkeratome that cut the corneal tissue by using a metal blade. The other was the use of laser to correct the refractive error by reshaping the corneal surface.

Students would be offered 50 per cent concession in treatment charges at the foundation’s centres in the city and Tirupur.

Most of the complications of lasik surgery were related to the creation of the flap. The new technology used the laser method for precision and safety. Dr. Ramamurthy also said the foundation had screened over a lakh school students for eye defects through programmes held in their schools. It had been found that 10 per cent of these children had undetected defects in the eye. Treatment for these was very important. The screening would resume when the schools re-opened and the students would be offered 50 per cent concession in treatment charges at the foundation’s centres in the city and Tirupur.
