Marudhamalai And Thadagam Road Get Widen

Motor vehicles struggling to wade through the narrow Thadagam Road in the city. State Highways Department is planning to widen Marudhamalai Road and Thadagam Road into four-lane. Talking to The Hindu, Divisional Engineer of State Highways Department K. Vellingiri pointed out that under instructions from Superintending Engineer N.T. Krishnamoorthy, the Department is having plans for widening the nine-km stretch of Thadagam Road from Gandhi Park to Kanuvai at an outlay of Rs.9 crore.

Plans for widening Thadagam Road gains importance as the road has many upcoming residential colonies on either side of it besides being one of the inter-state routes connecting Coimbatore with Mannarkad region of Palakkad district in Kerala. In addition, the road is the vital connecting link for the city with Thadagam area, which houses a large number brick kilns. The lorries carrying bricks have been a cause of a number of fatal accidents sparking public agitation.

The other plan is to widen Marudhamalai Road from Lawley Road to Marudhamalai. The work for widening the 10-km stretch would be at an outlay of Rs. 10 crore. The road gains importance because it leads to an important temple, Law College and Bharathiyar University. The area is one of the fast growing suburbs in the region. The authorities are delaying the execution of the work for enabling the civic body to complete underground sewer and water supply line laying works. Initially, the Highways Department is commencing the works for widening Yaanaipallam bridge into a four lane bridge at Rs. 40 lakh.
