500 Saplings Planted At Schools

Close to 500 saplings were planted in various schools as part of a pilot initiative to mark the World Environment Day by Young Indians of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and supported by Project Green Hands (PGH) of Isha Foundation in the city on Thursday. Arjun Prakash, co-chair, Young Indians and S. Chandra Sekhar, chair, Environment and Health Focus Areas, Young Indians inaugurated the drive by planting saplings at the Chandra Matriculation School.

The objective of the drive was to make school premises more eco-friendly and also to sensitise children on the importance of “Going Green”. Under the “Two children one plant” scheme, each sapling was nurtured by two children. The joint effort of the PGH, CII and seven schools resulted in the planting of more than 500 saplings in and around Coimbatore. The aim of the campaign was to create awareness on the need for the conservation of ecology and to sensitise the future generations on the need to plant saplings.


The campaign covered 3000 students from seven schools namely PSG Sarvajana School, G. Ramasamy Naidu School, Kanya Gurukulam School, GRD CPF School, Chandra Matriculation School, Sri K Rangasamy Naidu School and KG School. The Isha Foundation’s project intends to plant 114 million saplings state-wide. Since its inception in 2004, PGH has overseen the planting of more than five million saplings by over one million people. To mark the World Environment Day, the Principal General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), A. Shajahan commenced a drive to plant saplings on BSNL premises along w ith T. Natarajan, General Manager (Operations).
