An Asthma Clinic was opened at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday to provide specialised care to asthma patients and also to generate awareness among them on the ways to manage the disease. A press release that was issued here by the hospital said there were three types of the disease: acute asthma, intermittent asthma and persistent asthma.
Reasons ranging from pollution to changing lifestyle were said to cause the disease. The release said five per cent to 10 per cent of the population in the world suffered from asthma. One out of every five children in the 7-13 age group suffered from the disease. At least 30 per cent of the patients who came to the CMCH every day were suffering from asthma or other respiratory problems. The release said the hospital had procured a peak flow meter and spirometer for the clinic to assess the respiratory capacity of the patients. Patients would be provided with drugs and inhalers.
