Karunya Signd MoU With BIDR

Karunya University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with The Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research (BIDR), Sede Boqer, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, for joint research and collaboration in developing appropriate technologies and water management programmes. The MoU was signed by Paul Dhinakaran, Chancellor of Karunya University, and Avigad Vonshak, Director of BIDR, in Israel recently, according to a university release.

Much of Israel is arid and has faced water shortage issues by developing appropriate technologies and water management programmes. It has tackled water-related issues and developed its dry lands into fertile lands. Tamil Nadu has been facing water shortage due to increasing trends in population density, changes in water use pattern, pollution of fresh water sources and degradation of ecosystems.

The MoU will envisage joint research in resolving these problems, such as identification of ground water sources utilising modern tools for geophysical exploration, application of nano-technology for water purification, application of stable isotopes in hydro-geological investigations, and developing facilities for studies on water chemistry and biochemistry related hydrophytes.Investigations on water related environmental problems, droughts, floods, contamination due to arsenic and fluoride and impact of climate change will also be studied. The MoU will also facilitate the exchange of research students, faculty and students, twinning programmes, sandwich programmes, transfer of technology and collaboration with third parties.
