Coimbatore Scored Well In Healthcare Department

Coimbatore has scored well in the healthcare department with patients coming in from other parts of the country for treatment. The city can confidently claim that they are the leaders in specialised forms of treatments, the transradial angioplasty procedure for example. This is a cardiac treatment procedure in which a balloon is used to open blocked arteries in the heart by guiding a drug-coated stent through the wrist. Patients can undergo this procedure safely, comfortably, with minimal pain and least-possible hospitalisation duration. The operation can be done as an outpatient procedure and patients need not worry about their mobility, which might be hindered if the procedure is done through their leg or groin.

“They can even walk out of the operation theatre,” GKNM Hospital interventional cardiologist Dr Rajpal K Abhaichand told ET. The entire procedure is done through a tiny hole in the wrist. After operation, there would be a small bandage around the wrist, which can be removed a few hours later. A transradial angioplasty costs similar to a normal angioplasty procedures, but other expenses like hospitalisation, local travel and food can be avoided by opting for this procedure. According to Dr Rajpal, the total procedure in transradial method, including doctor’s fee, would cost Rs 75,000.

“In other procedures, the patient has to stay for a minimum of two to three days. Those expenses along with prolonged stay expenses in case of complications are additional costs that patients have to endure,” he said. Despite its multiple advantages, not many centres in India perform radial procedures due to the learning curve involved.
