Surveillance Cameras Installed

Thondiraj, and the Chairman of the Coimbatore Corporation (South Zone), Painthamil Pari, on Saturday. Leader of the opposition in the Corporation Council, V.N. Udayakumar, also took part.

The six surveillance cameras have been installed from Collectorate round about to KG Theatre covering the entire stretch of railway station, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, St Francis Convent Junction on Tiruchi Road, Arts College Road covering the sessions court complex and KG Hospital and Theatre. A total of six cameras - four speed dome cameras and two static cameras - have been installed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh. The speed dome cameras could be rotated in 180 degree and could zoom in to catch the registration number of any vehicle. The facility installed now is sophisticated with recording facility. A control room has been set up at the railway station where these cameras are hooked to a system with 500 GB hard disc.

Once in two or three days these recordings are transferred to a compact disc and handed over to the police. The entire CCTV monitoring system also has a public announcement facility for regulating the flow of traffic. The city already has such a CCTV monitoring system on Cross Cut Road but that was with static cameras and without recording system. According to S.K. Ravichandran, proprietor of a private communications firm, the money spent on installing the system with the permission of the City Police would be realised through private sponsors in the form of advertisement boards on poles mounted on it.
