Jumble Sale

The Vasantha Memorial Trust has generated around Rs. 6 lakh through the ninth jumble sale organised at R.S. Puram recently. The sale, conducted every year by the organisation to raise funds for the welfare of people afflicted with cancer, drew huge crowds with some people waiting since 5 a.m. outside the hall. The sale is an opportunity for the lower income groups to buy things at unbelievably cheap rates.

Except clothes and foodstuff, the sale had a wide variety of second-hand items including consumer durables such as refrigerators, washing machines, electrical appliances, furniture, gift articles, toys, and even door frames. More than 300 households donated their unused or unwanted goods to the Trust for the sale. About 150 volunteers of the Trust were involved in carrying the goods (15 trucks) to the venue of the sale. The students of VLB Janakiammal Polytechnic College offered their services for volunteering. The Trust began the work well in advance campaigning from door-to- door, collecting the goods, sorting, packaging, labelling and finally loading and unloading the goods.
