19th Annual Meeting Of the Indian Society For Paediatric Neurosurgery

The 19th annual meeting of the Indian Society for Paediatric Neurosurgery will be held here from November 7 to 9. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, R.Murali, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, described the annual conference as an event that would bring together specialists in paediatric neurosurgery from all over the country and abroad. “Neurosurgical operations in children and newborns are very challenging. We need to create awareness among general practitioners, paediatricians as well as specialists about the latest advances in paediatric neurosurgery,” he said.

The main themes that would be discussed include spasticity and neuro monitoring. Spasticity was the tightening of the muscles which prevented children from fully exercising their mobility. The problem usually occurred in children with cerebral palsy. Neurosurgery would help reduce spasticity and improve the mobility of such children. Monitoring of the brain and spine functions while the surgery was being performed helped reduce the incidence of irreversible damage to the brain and the spinal cord. Morbidity had always been high in neurosurgery. With neuro monitors, the surgeon would be alerted if there was an injury to the nerve.

The conference would be inaugurated by A.Rajasekaran, President of the National board of Exams. K.Meer Mustafa Hussain, Vice Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai, and Paul Steinbok, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada, would take part. Mr. Steinbok would deliver the annual ‘Dr.Bhagwati Oration’ on “Technical Advances in Paediatric Neurosurgical Operations.” In addition to lectures, a pre-conference live surgical workshop would be conducted at the Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. More than 120 delegates were expected to participate.
