Corporation Asked Layout Owners To Hand Over Reserved Sites

The Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday asked layout owners in the city to hand over reserved sites and said it would take over sites not used for the benefit of the public. Rules mandated that 10 per cent of the total layout area should be earmarked as reserved site or public purpose site. Parks or other common facilities for the people were established on these sites. The sites should be handed over the Corporation by executing a gift deed. At the same time, the sites should be used only for the intended purpose. A press release issued by Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra drew the attention of the layout owners or developers to the Madras High Court order on April 12, 2007 that wanted all layout owners to hand over the sites to the local body.

There had been complaints from citizens’ groups that instead of the intended purpose, the sites were used for constructing buildings. The release said the Corporation it was taking a list of sites in each of the 72 wards. Boards stating that these were Corporation’s lands would be put up. The Commissioner called upon residents’ welfare groups and other voluntary organisations to provide information on such sites in order to enable the Corporation to take steps to protect these from misuse.
