Not A Good Pongal For Construction & Related Industry

Daily wagers, particularly those in construction and related industry here, are unhappy, as they have been virtually thrown out of job for the last one week, due to non-arrival of materials, following the truckers strike which is continuing. With the labour-intensive construction industry brought to a grinding halt for want of building materials, over 1.7 lakh to two lakh labourers in the district remained 'restless' for not being in a position to celebrate the important festival of Tamil Nadu, 'Pongal,' with usual joy and fervour.

The workers get their wages every saturday, after working for six days. But as in this case, the workers, attached to the contractors were sitting idle at the construction sites, waiting for supply of cement, brick and steel,CITU sources said. Though some contractors give advance money to buy food and other essential commodites, based on the number of working days, with no works going on, contractors were also not having money to offer to their workers, the sources said.

As the pongal festivities and purchases begin from next Tuesday onwards with Pongal falling on Jan 14, the workers were unhappy, with many having no money at hand. The continuation of lorry strike for more than five days, has come as a rude shock to them and their families, the sources said.
