SIMA welcomes Ministers announcement
The South India Small Spinners’ Association has welcomed Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran’s announcement that efforts will be taken to ensure that cotton prices do not affect the farmers or the textile mills. In a release, association president G. Soundararajan said that the Minister had said that such efforts would benefit the industry. The Indian Spinning Mill Owners’ Association said the Ministry should ensure that cotton farmers had access to quality seeds. Cotton trade should be regulated so that mills and farmers in the country were not hit.
Exports should be permitted only after ensuring that the domestic industry had adequate quantity of cotton. Tamil Nadu accounted for 45 per cent of the country’s yarn production. It also had several powerloom and handloom units. However, most of the cotton requirements of these units were purchased from other States, the association pointed out.
