Conference On Recharging Of Ground Water

The District Collector, V. Palanikumar has announced that 11 of the 19 panchayat union are drought hit and the administration is planning to popularise the concept of recharging ground water resources through open wells. He was addressing a conference on recharging of ground water resources through open wells. Collector said that the preciousness of water is understood only during the drought season.

The recharging of ground water will be done in 16 panchayats unions in Coimbatore district. Panchayat Unions such as Annur, Avanashi, Kinathukkadavu, Madukkarai,Periyanaickenpala- yam, Pollachi (North), Pollachi (South), Sircar Samakulam, Sultanpet, Sulur and Thondamuthur are found to be worst hit by drought. Subsidies are being extended to recharge ground water resources through open wells. Small farmers were being given Rs 4,000 as subsidy while big farmers were provided with Rs 2,000. The scheme is being implemented in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra and Rajasthan, he said.


In Tamil Nadu the number of farmers having open wells is high; hence Rs 450 crore had been earmarked for disbursement as subsidy. Banks, voluntary organisations, public works department and the farming community should extend their fullest support, he said. To enhance availability of water, the State Government through Anna Village Renassiance Scheme was taking efforts to enhance water resources.
