The stump of a sandalwood tree that was cut at the Race Course in Coimbatore on Sunday. An attempt to fell a sandalwood tree and smuggle it was made in the early hours of Sunday at Race Course in the city. The tree was located near the bungalow of the District Revenue Officer. It was said that an electric saw was used to cut the tree in an area where the residence-cum-camp offices of senior police officials were located. The sound of the tree falling on the ground alerted the people around and the culprits escaped. They did not have the time to put the tree on to a waiting vehicle. Race Course police registered a case and a vigil was mounted in areas with sandalwood trees. The felled tree was handed over to the Department of Forests.
