Siruthuli Asked TNEB Not To Cut The Trees

Siruthuli has asked the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) not to cut down trees but prune them. In a memorandum to the TNEB, Siruthuli said that while efforts were being made to enhance the green cover across the country through afforestation drives, it was very unfortunate that field level officials of a Government agency were resorting to indiscriminate cutting of trees.
Trees in front of CIS Church on Race Course were felled mercilessly. Similarly, during checks done to prevent line disruptions, TNEB staff had even pruned branches of trees that were not growing towards power lines. Such a trend was alarming. Siruthuli, along with Race Course and Neighbourhood Association (RANA) and OSAI presented a memorandum with photographs to TNEB authorities.

The TNEB officials who expressed concern at such indiscriminate tree cutting practices, has immediately instructed its staff that only pruning should be done hereafter. The board said inspection of trees and pruning would be publicised so that members of voluntary organisations and general public could accompany the TNEB staff. Those who were entrusted with the work would be given identity cards, it added.
