Students’ skills need to be developed: NAAC chief

There has to be a consistent awareness in ensuring the quality of higher education and quantity should not lead to compromise in quality, said Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), H.A. Ranganath here recently.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Nehru Group of Institutions and Educational and Charitable Trust to present the P.K. Das Memorial Best Faculty Awards to 18 teachers.

Harping on the quality of education, Mr. Ranganath said that the skills of students besides academics needed to be developed. He also sought the teachers to enlighten the UG students as marketing them in the employment front was proving to be tough. Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University C. Swaminathan underlined the need for making graduates into marketable products and teachers to perform a socially, academically and ethically responsible role. Parents and teachers besides academics would have to ensure the character of a student.

Mr. Swaminathan cautioned that with education becoming digital and e-learning dominating, if teachers failed to equip themselves, there was always a danger of technology replacing them. Teachers should rise to the occasion and prove that no technology could replace their role.

Use Free and Open Source Software for different applications’

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) can be used for a number of applications in the rural sector, Gopi Krishna S Garge, Professor of the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science, said here on Friday.Speaking at the inaugural of the Anna University Free and Open Source Software Association (AUFOSSA), he said that most of the focus now was on the Information Technology (IT) domain. FOSS could be used for applications related to rural infrastructure, maintenance of records and capturing the rural wisdom.Inter-disciplinary interaction in FOSS would bring innovation and revenue in the future.

Mr. Garge said FOSS was the essence of community effort in software.Software packages that were available off the shelf might not meet the entire needs of the customers.FOSS helped customise, add the required functionalities and avail of the source code.

The FOSS was now available for almost all branches of learning. Yet, only 60 per cent of what was needed in the application space was available. “Apart from adding functionalities have far-sighted approaches. Come up with ideas that are workable and innovative,” he said. There were numerous opportunities to code, integrate and suggest ideas.

T. Kannadasan, Vice-Chancellor (Officiate) of Anna University, Coimbatore, said the association was an initiative of Anna University, Coimbatore and the United Institute of Technology.The university was organising awareness programmes and training for the faculty in association with the ICT Academy. It was also trying to give IT-enabled soft skill training to about 5,000 engineering students to enhance their employability skills.

S. Palaniswami, Registrar of Anna University, Coimbatore, said policies governing the life of traditional software were not applicable to FOSS.

Pradeep Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Amphisoft Technologies, said students had the opportunity to collaborate, form communities and participate in discussions through the association’s web portal.R. Mahalingam, Co-founder of United Institute of Technology and Vice-Chairman of the association, said FOSS was confined to educational institutions earlier. Now, it was a business model and many innovators used FOSS.

The association would drive open source software among educational institutions in the region for learning and research.It would also encourage the faculty and the students to contribute to the FOSS community.

application for the Amrita Engineering Entrance Examination

The application for the Amrita Engineering Entrance Examination, scheduled for May 2, 2010, will be available from December 21 (Monday). Candidates are admitted to the B. Tech programmes through the entrance examination conducted in more than 75 cities across the country. The application will be made available through select branches of Dhanalakshmi Bank, Axis bank and State bank of Hyderabad, according to a release from Amrita School of Engineering, a wing of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University.

MBA Admission at TNAU

The admission for Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), has commenced.

Robert Bosch Corner at CIT

The Robert Bosch Corner at Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) was opened to the students and faculty on Wednesday.According to a CIT release, this follows the MoU the institution signed with Robert Bosch India (RBIN) Limited in June, 2007.

The primary goals of the MoU are to develop and foster strategic linkages with CIT and technical departments at RBIN, to assist the students and enhance their knowledge about the latest technologies in which RBIN is involved and to understand the needs and expectations of both the institute and the organisation and to identify the measures required to meet the requirements therein.

The corner was opened by S.R.K.Prasad, Correspondent, CIT, along with Manu Saale, Department Head, Engineering Services – Hardware, RBEI.V.Selladurai, Principal, CIT, and R.Prabhakar, Secretary, attended the opening ceremony.This facility is established in the library building of CIT.Robert Bosch has used this facility to display Bosch’s products, technical findings, reports, books and periodicals in the field of automotive industries, embedded systems, IT and other niche areas.

Award

One of the outcomes of the MoU is the constitution of the “Bosch Award for the best project at CIT”.The award includes a cash prize for Rs. 10,000 along with a citation and medal. The award goes to the best project work in the area of Electronics and Communication.

Bosch Award for the academic year 2008-09 was given to Arun Prasanna, Purushothaman, Sakthi Priyan and Sylvester Pious.

Strike aimed at drawing government attention

Students of the Forest College at Mettupalayam, who have been on a strike since November 20, have clarified that they have not indulged in any violence damaging the college property.The strike is only aimed at drawing the attention of the government to their 25-year-long “genuine demand” and to invite them for talks.In a release, the students said that blocking road at Mettupalayam recently was only to bring their demand for job prospects to the attention of the government.

“There had not been any instigation” and this was the fifth massive protest by the students for the same demand, the release added.A number of political parties had expressed their support to the students understanding the anxiety and uncertainty of career foreseen by the students. The students were not in a position to refuse such moral support and it should not be seen or described as an excuse to give political colour to the agitation, the release added.

Reacting to the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission’s (TNPSC) contention that B.Sc Forestry was just like any other degree course, the students pointed out that B.Sc Forestry was a four-year professional course started specifically with an objective to provide professionally trained manpower to meet the forestry needs.

Forest college closed..

Following student unrest since Friday, the Principal of the Forest College, Mettuppalayam, on instructions from Registrar of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, ordered the closure of the college. The students have been demanding reservation in direct recruitment to Range Officer’s post in the Forest Department.

The college and the hostel have been closed and students have been asked to leave for their homes. On Friday the students abstained from classes and examinations. On Saturday they gagged their mouth with a black cloth and on Sunday they signed a banner, affixing thumb impressions with blood. On Monday, they gave a petition to the Chief Minister through the collector and tonsured their heads as a symbolic protest. Since the situation did not improve and the students continued to abstain from classes, the college authorities ordered the closure of the college. Meanwhile, students who vacated the hostel came to the college entrance and sat in front of the gate with their belongings. With many of the students being from other districts and far off places, authorities were considering granting permission for an overnight stay. Revenue and police authorities held talks with the students which remained inconclusive till late evening.

Help students improve efficiency, teachers told

Corporation Mayor R. Venkatachalam on Monday asked teachers who underwent yoga training programme to use the same to mould the students into better citizens.He was speaking at the valediction of the two-week training programme for corporation school teachers conducted at Sidhapudur, Ramakrishnapuram and R.S. Puram SRP Ammani Ammal School from November 9 to 21.

The nearly 12-day training programme had brought immense benefits to teachers by in terms of rejuvenating them and to renew the energy levels and balanced emotions of the teachers.Yoga would relieve teachers of stress, keep them fresh and energetic.This should reflect in their academic work and efficiency levels so that corporation school students do better in their academics.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra wanted a departure from conventional education and pre set procedures.Classroom atmosphere should not be merely making the students by heart the syllabus and repeat the same at examinations and get promoted. Corporation schools get only poor students unlike private schools having affluent students.Lack of affordability should not deter a student from getting a quality education.

Deputy Mayor N. Karthik said that yoga helped teachers regain and renew their self confidence, shape up their responsibility which would go a long way in imparting quality education to students at corporation schools. Education Committee Chairman R. Kalyanasundaram said that the objective behind imparting yoga was to ensure quality life for teachers and quality education to students.

He reminded the teachers that the benefits of the yoga programme should be reflected in the pass percentage of the Corporation Schools in the coming academic year.Chief Executive of Isha Yoga J.M. Balamurugan also spoke.

SET exam results today

The results of the State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lecturership-Additional Examination 2008, conducted by Bharathiar University in 5 subjects - Law, Philosophy, Management , Library Science and Physical Education on August 16 will be published in the websites: www.b-u.ac.in \ www.kalvimalar.com at 10 a.m. on November 21.

According to a release from B.Krishnamurthy, Secretary, SET, and Controller of Examinations, Bharathiar University, candidates can access their results by giving their roll number. Successful candidates will be intimated individually.

Initiating them into a learning beyond curriculum

To enable the students of its schools acquire English language skills and enrich their knowledge through newspaper reading, the Coimbatore Corporation launched on Tuesday The Hindu’s Newspaper in Education programme for 26 of its 85 schools.The Hindu is already carrying out this programme in private schools. Under this, resource persons teach students how to make the best out of reading newspapers; where they can find material to improve both knowledge and their resources in English language.

Under the programme launched on Tuesday, each of the 26 Corporation schools will be provided 25 copies of The Hindu every day.Inaugurating the programme by handing over copies of The Hindu to students at the Corporation Higher Secondary School at Sidhapudur, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said the Corporation had allocated Rs.1 lakh for the scheme that was aimed at benefiting the students.

The Education Committee and the Corporation Council cleared the proposal quickly and this reflected the intention of the civic body to raise the standards of the students studying in its schools.

The Mayor said that by improving knowledge through extensive reading, students could not only go on to become civil services officers or top level executives, they could also occupy the very demanding post of a Mayor. “City administration is not an easy task. It requires people with a lot of acumen. You can occupy this post and do well if you use the opportunity given to you now,” he told a gathering of students. Deputy Mayor N. Karthik pointed out that newspapers were a source of knowledge. One could get a lot of information on diverse fields of activity.

The students of Government or Corporation schools were not inferior to those in the private schools. Appreciating The Hindu’s contribution to the field of education in the form of programmes such as NIE, he said this provided immense opportunities to students to learn more than what was taught in classrooms.

Regional General Manager of The Hindu D. Rajkumar said NIE was part of the newspaper’s corporate-social responsibility. The newspaper was being provided at a substantial concession so that it could be an affordable resource for learning for them. The NIE provided knowledge beyond academics, but without affecting the school curriculum, Mr. Rajkumar said.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra, Leader of the Opposition V.N. Udayakumar, Education Committee Chairman R. Kalyanasundaram, members P. Shobana, V.K.S.K. Senthilkumar, Thamizhselvi and Meena Loganathan and Corporation Education Officer (in-charge) T. Raju were present.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram and the committee members said later that the committee scrutinised the NIE proposal and found it to be of immense benefit to the students. The committee was focussed on improving the standards of education in the Corporation schools and wanted all the students to scale great heights in their career.

Ms. Shobana was already taking spoken English classes for Corporation school students. Mr. Senthilkumar, Ms. Thamizhselvi and Ms. Loganathan said the NIE programme was one of the many initiatives the Corporation and the Education Committee were taking up to build academic and co-curricular skills in students.

yoga for school children !!

Along with the efforts to improve hygiene in its schools, the Coimbatore Corporation has begun an exercise simultaneously for the good health of the teachers and students.In association with Isha Yoga Centre, the Corporation has drawn up a plan for yoga training for the teachers and students.

The first phase of the yoga and meditation programme for about 550 teachers began on Monday. The training for the teachers is being given at three schools: the Corporation Higher Secondary School at Sidhapudur, the Girls’ Higher Secondary School at Ramakrishnapuram and the Girls’ High School at R.S. Puram. The training will be provided for one-and-a-half hours after class hours on working days and for seven hours on Saturday. The next phase of training for about 300 teachers will be held in January or February next year. “We will begin the training for the students in the third week of this month,” Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said on Wednesday. “We will start with about 2,000 students. And, the entire strength of 30,000 students [in 85 schools] will be covered in phases,” he said. Chairman of the Corporation Council’s Standing Committee on Education, Parks and Playgrounds R. Kalyanasundaram said the yoga programme had been approved by the committee last year. But, it did not progress beyond some sessions in a couple of schools.

After Mr. Mishra took over as the Commissioner, the scheme was given a fresh impetus, Mr. Kalyanasundaram said.The Commissioner said the training could be given to the teachers first, so that they could, in turn, train the students.

Model entrance exam for IAS aspirants

A model entrance examination for the IAS aspirants will be conducted here on November 22 by the Shunmugam’s IAS Study Circle.

According to a release from U.Shunmugam, director of the circle , this study circle is run by people who have made it to the IAS interview stage and it has been functioning since 2006. It has so far trained about 250 candidates for civil service examinations, TNPSC and banking.

Around 500 candidates in and around Coimbatore have applied for the exam to be held at the Suburban Matriculation School, Ram Nagar, from9.30 a.m. to 12 noon.

BU convocation on 24th

The 25th convocation of the Bharathiar University will be held on November 24.

According to a release, Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of Bharathiar University, will preside and Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudy will be the guest of honour.

4 medicos held for ragging !!

The city police on Friday night arrested and remanded to custody four students of the Coimbatore Medical College on charges of ragging and causing injuries to 14 junior students.

The college authorities placed them under suspension.Muthukumar, Ramanan, Logesh, fourth year students, and Karthik, a third year student, face charges of ragging three students on October 19, and 11 students on October 21 in the college hostel.It is learnt that the seniors took the 11 students from the first and second year to the terrace and ragged them, besides inflicting bite marks on their hands.

One of the students alerted the hostel warden, who held an inquiry and reported the matter to the Dean.On completion of an inquiry by the Ragging Monitoring Committee, the Dean preferred a complaint.The arrested students hail from the districts of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem.

Police invoked Section 323 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Ragging Act of 1997.

China to Maruthamalai to learn English !

From China to the foothills of Marudamalai, it had been a unique learning experience for the small batch of Chinese students who just completed their BA in English at the Bharathiar University (BU).This is the second batch from China, consisting of 13 students, who took up the course for one year at the university as per a pact signed between BU and a Chinese university for exchange of students and faculty.“The first batch consisted of nine students, who got good placements in China,” claimed BU vice-chancellor Prof C Swaminathan, adding that they were planning to take 50 students next time.

The Chinese students were jubilant at the farewell party held on Tuesday for them. “The learning experience at the varsity was fantastic. We have really learnt a lot during the course and are thankful to all the teachers who helped us learn English,” Zhangyong, one of the students, told Express.The syllabus includes listening, speaking and reading skills, besides literature. The students were also trained in public speaking.According to Chen Desheng, the classes were interactive and both teachers and students actively took part in the learning process. He is now pursuing his postgraduation in English. “Apart from learning English, we learnt the culture of Tamil Nadu and its language, I loved it a lot,” he said.“Around five have expressed their interest in pursuing post-graduation at the varsity itself,” said Prof R Palanivel, head, Department of English.

Distance education examination schedule of BU

The annual / semester examination for all undergraduate, post-graduate, B. Ed., M. Ed., MBA, MCA, post-graduate diploma, diploma and MoU courses, offered under the School of Distance Education of the Bharathiar University, will commence on December 10.

According to a release from B. Krishnamurthy, Controller of Examinations, prescribed applications for candidates with arrear papers (those who have already completed the course and the 2008-09 annual pattern) can be downloaded from the website www.b-u.ac.in.

The same can also be obtained from the office of the Controller of Examinations, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore – 641046, by sending a self-addressed envelope (22 cm x 12 cm) bearing stamp worth Rs. 10.The envelope should be super-scribed as “Request for SDE Arrear Examination Application Form”, the release added.

The last date for receipt of filled-in application from candidates with arrear is October 23 without fine and October 30 with a fine of Rs. 10.

Students’ convention

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Ettimadai, Coimbatore will host the National Convention of Society of Automobile Engineers (students chapter) on October 5 and 6. Nearly 700 students from 70 colleges across the country are expected to take part.
