The Veterinary University Training and Research Centre here will offer a free training programme in pig farming on February 24 and 25. According to a release, the programme at the centre will benefit farmers and entrepreneurs involved in livestock farming.

There is a large domestic and export demand for quality pork. Pigs can be reared economically utilising vegetable waste, kitchen and hotel food waste. The training will comprise lectures on selection of breeding stock, housing, breeding, feeding and disease management of pigs. It will also emphasise on processing and establishment of retail pork outlets and on marketing potential available. Inaugurating a three-day international conference on “Sensors, Security, Software and Intelligent Systems” at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT), he said companies like Toyota, Samsung, Intel, Microsoft, etc., had captured the world markets. “We have seen centres of excellence come up in all parts of the world, including in countries that have been defined as underdeveloped.”

Giving Taiwan and India, he said that there had been remarkable changes from 1969 to 2001 in these countries. From martial law in 1969 Taiwan had undergone an economic miracle. “Today, it is a country that has become a major player in the world market, in select areas. It has developed science parks that serve as models for the world,” Mr. Reid said. In the case of India, he said students no longer had to leave the country for higher education. “Very fine institutions of higher learning in engineering and science and other fields have come up in the last 30 years.”

S.R.K. Prasad, Correspondent, CIT, said with China coming up with engineering colleges on a par with the standard of Indian Institutes of Technology and setting up of export zones for Information Technology (IT) with phenomenal infrastructure, India would find it difficult to continue to revel in the pride of being an IT giant.

“The recent scam in the IT sector is very sad for a sector which is already suffering. South East Asian countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are coming up in a big way as lower end IT service providers. National Seminar On Cancer Biology

The PSG College of Pharmacy here will hold from November 20 to 22 a national seminar on “Cancer-Biology and Development of New Chemical Entities”. A press release from the college has said that the seminar was being sponsored by the Central Government’s Department of Science and Technology and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The objective of the seminar was to create a common platform for the academic and industrial researchers.Around 200 delegates were expected to present their research findings. Service Training For Prison Security Staff

A three day in-service training for the prison security staff began on Saturday at the Police Recruit School on Avanashi Road in the city. Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, Narayanamoorthy presided over the inauguration of the training capsule. Superintendent of Prisons, Coimbatore Central Prison, P. Govindarajan, Bharathiar University Students Welfare Co-ordinator, M. Padmanabhan, Deputy Jailor, Soosai Manickam took part in the inauguration.

As many as 150 prison security staff in the ranks of Grade II and Grade I, Assistant Jailors took part in the training. The prison security staff would be given refresher training on the duties and rights of the prisoners, procedures and rules in the jail manual, ensuring high security standards, intelligence gathering. Resources persons such as lecturers, psychological experts, jail officials, police officers would offer lecture on adherence to the rights of the prisoners, importance of ensuring the mental, psychological and physical health.

Accident Prevention Measure Programme

City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali explains accident prevention measures and emergency care for accident victims at a programme organised by Kovai Medical Center and Hospital in Coimbatore. A meeting on trauma care and accident prevention, organised by Kovai Medical Center and Hospital here on Sunday, stressed corporate-social responsibility in preventive measures and also in ensuring emergency medical facilities and health insurance.

Speaking on the “Role of police and citizens in preventing road accidents and saving precious lives,” City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali stressed the need to prevent accidents through education and compliance to rules and very little enforcement. He explained the various education methods adopted by the police, such as training to bus and autorickshaw drivers on traffic rules and regulations and motivating youngsters to wear helmets.

The Commissioner sought the cooperation of all sections of society in implementing the various accident prevention measures. These included putting up speed breakers in school zones and preventing reckless driving. He appreciated the support from Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Corporation Commissioner V.K. Shanmugham and councillors of the Corporation in carrying out these measures.

Chairman of the hospital Nalla G. Palaniswami spoke on the need for various measures to prevent accidents and loss of lives on roads. President of the hospital U.K. Ananthapadmanabhan pointed out the need for emergency facilities in large hospitals to treat victims of road traffic accidents and also disasters such as bomb blasts, train accidents and plane crash. He assured the support of the city’s hospitals to the city police’s Golden Hour project to save those injured in accidents.

Mr. Ananthapadmanabhan said more than 300 residents in the colonies around the hospital also attended the programme to know of the role of the community, the local bodies and the hospitals in preventing accidents. The importance of accident-related health insurance was also highlighted at the programme. Branch Managers from New India Assurance and Star Health and Allied Insurance spoke on the benefits of health and accident insurance.

Road Safety Programme

School students take a pledge to propagate road safety, at the programme organised at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore. “Laziness and indiscipline”, said a gathering of about 300 school students, when they were asked what was the reason behind people not wearing helmets and seat belts.

With these words indicating their understanding of the situation on the nation’s roads, a road safety mission of the Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore and Ganga Hospital is set to make school and college students propagators of road safety in the city. After sensitising bus and autorickshaw drivers of accident prevention, the mission – named Uyir – now looks to carrying out its ‘wear helmets and seat belts’ at a micro level. It expects the students to prevent their parents from riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets or from driving a car without wearing the seat belt.

“The next time your parents leave for office, insist on their adhering to such basic traffic rules to prevent fatal accidents,” Ganga Hospital Director S. Rajasekaran told the students. On why students were chosen for the campaign, Dr. Rajasekaran explained how the Singapore Government had propagated cleanliness through the students some decades ago. This approach had turned Singapore a clean country, he said.

Launching the campaign for and “All Helmet City”, City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali pointed out that 90 per cent of the fatal cases involved two-wheeler riders who did not wear helmets. But, some people sustained fatal injuries to the head despite wearing helmets. This was because they did not strap it on properly. Adherence to rules must be total. Only then lives could be safe on the roads. Mr. Mahali said it was not enough if the students only advised their parents to wear helmets. They must also wear a protective headgear.

Rotary District 3201Governor Baby Joseph said the college students would also be involved in the sensitisation drive. While bad roads and poor enforcement of rules were blamed for accidents, adherence to traffic rules would go a long way in preventing these. Too many young people died on the roads and this affected the productivity of the country. The Rotary would focus a great deal on road safety and there would be emphasis on wearing helmets and seat belts, he said.

Training For Women

The Indian Institute of Behaviour Technology at Navavoor, Coimbatore, will organise free training camps on self-defence for women every Saturday from September 21. Director of the institute, Vedagiri Ganesan, said mental health problems were more among women. The male-dominant society contributed to this. SIEMA Organiseing Meeting

The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association will organise a meeting here on September 9 to explain the standards and labelling programme and implementation of Bureau of Energy Efficiency norms to the pumpset manufacturers. Jayakumar Ramdass, president of the association has said in a release that a steering committee was formed by the Union Ministry of Power in 2005 to bring about energy conservation in pumps and motors.

The association, which was one of the members, submitted a comprehensive paper and after studying it, the committee recommended to the Ministry of Power to implement the standards and labelling programme and star rating for motors and pumps. In August this year, the steering committee finalised the date for implementation of the norms and requested the association to organise an awareness meeting for its members here. Sanjay Garg, Energy Economist of the Bureau would explain the importance of the programme on September 9. Ajay Mathur, Director-General of the Bureau was also expected to participate.

Secure Tech 2008 - Held

The symposium ‘Secure Tech 2008’ held on Friday stressed the importance of “man-machine” combine and preventive measures in security systems.Perisecure, a security systems integrator conducted the symposium and was supported by suppliers of critical physical security systems.The symposium focused on Integrated Physical Security (IPS) systems.

According to the organisers, the purpose of the symposium was to provide key executives of the local industry a first hand view of intelligent safety and security equipment that were progressively becoming standard configurations of the manufacturing and exporting industries.The key resource persons for the symposium were from the Central Industrial Security Force as well as the insurance sector.

The symposium also had a display of live and operational electric fencing, surveillance and access control systems, each functionally independent of each other and integrated.The crucial elements DDDRRR – Deterrence, Detection, Delay, Response, Recovery and Re-evaluation were the fundamentals of the IPS plan.The symposium also pointed out the need to adopt reliable and automated systems that were increasingly gaining importance in a cost escalating and competitive economic environment.The symposium served the purpose of broadening the level of awareness amongst end-users as well as providing them with a platform to clarify their own doubts from the specialists on hand.SecureTech will be an annual event for Coimbatore since it had established itself as an important manufacturing centre for a diverse range of products by local and international companies.

Training Prog Between CRPF And AJK Collage

A training programme between the AJK College of Arts and Science and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was inaugurated by P. Mallana Goud, Inspector-General of Police, Southern Sector-CRPF, Hyderabad, recently at a function held on the college campus in Navakkarai.He emphasised the need for CRPF personnel to be more technical savvy.

Ajeet Kumar Lal Mohan, Secretary and Managing Trustee of the College announced 50 per cent scholarship to children of CRPF personnel. The training would be offered in area of computer skills, library management, kitchen hygiene, house keeping and food service methods by the college. CRPF would be training students and faculties in disaster management and handling situations during various emergencies. The initial programme would be for four weeks.

Siemens Training Centre Inaugurated

A Centre of Excellence for Automation and Drives, a SIEMENS authorised training centre for the Southern region, was inaugurated at Karunya University here on Monday. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the university and SIEMENS in April 2008 to provide customer training and to be an interface between the industry and institution.

Inaugurating the centre, J.K. Verma, vice-president – Automation and Drives, Business Development and Sales, SIEMENS Limited, Mumbai, said: “This is the first training centre to be set up in the South. It will cater to the training needs of our customers in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, who use our drives and automation products. It will address the training needs of the students.” He said this was the first time the company was having a tie-up with an education institution. After the training centre at Kalwa, Mumbai, this was the first of its kind to be set up in this region. It cost Rs. 50 lakh. “The centre has plans to extend its training to customers using the switchgear products of SIEMENS,” Mr. Verma added.

“In addition to the customers, third and final year students from the electrical, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering disciplines will get hands-on training at the centre from the company experts,” S. First Aid Training

The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association will organise first aid training on August 8 and 9. K. Isha's “Anandha Alai”

Isha Foundation is conducting “Anandha Alai”, a series of seven-day yoga training programmes, in seven places across the State. The series, which began on July 16 in Coimbatore, will get over with “Anandha Sangamam” on August 23 where all the trainees will come together in the presence of the founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Swami Prabhodha, a representative of the foundation, told a press conference here on Saturday.

“From April to August we plan to cover some 50,000 people. Creating awareness about yoga is the aim of this programme.
