A major highlight at the show will be the ‘Capacity Enhancement Workshop Series for the Textile and Clothing Enterprises’ titled ‘Building Competitiveness through Value Addition.’ To be held on the second day of the show i.e. Saturday, September 5, 2009 between 09:45am and 1:30pm, the program will be conducted in two sessions.’

The first part will be titled ‘Assistance for Apparel Value Chain Enrichment – New Government Schemes for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.The second session will discuss ‘Avenues for Moving up in the Value Chain with Traditional Textiles and Clothing Segments.’ The sessions will be addressed by well-known personalities from the government, academic and industrial segments.

Yarnex 2009 comes from the house of S S Media & Marketing, organizers of the Fabrics & Accessories Trade Show, an event that is held yearly in Bangalore. The show recently completed its sixth successful year in a row.

Apparel Exports rise !

Apparel exports rose over four per cent to $10.13 billion in 2008-09 as against $9.68 billion in the previous year.Apparel Exports Promotion Council (AEPC) Chairman Rakesh Vaid attributed the reason for the growth to robust performance witnessed in the first two months -- April and May in 2008, after that there was a slowdown during the last six months of the fiscal.

Vaid, who is in Tirupur to attend the 3-day 28th India Knit Fair, told reporters that the recession usually put pressure on prices only, particularly in apparel industry. Due to the constant increase in the population, the demand for apparels was always on the upper side.

Asked about the situation this fiscal, he said it was projected to register a growth rate of seven per cent.However, compared to India, other Asian countries like China, Bangladesh and Indonesia had registered exponential growth of 15, 20 and 35 per cent, respectively, Vaid said.
A wide range of spring and summer collections of apparels and readymade garments were on display at the fair.

FIEO president received Padmashri ..

Mr A Sakthivel, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has been awarded Padam Shri Award by the Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Hon’ble President of India for his outstanding contribution to Indian exports and yeoman services rendered for development of infrastructure in Tirupur. It is the first time in the history of Padma Awards that an exporter has been honoured with this prestigious honour.

President FIEO is also known for his unforgetful contribution to the growth of Indian textile industry and especially for development of MSME segment. Mr Sakthivel single handedly brought the little known town Tirupur on the World map and made it nucleus of knitwear exports from India.

Mr Sakthivel, Managing Director, Poppy’s Knitwear, Tirupur is also President of Tirupur Exporters Association(TEA). Mr Sakthivel is on the Board of Director with the IDBI Bank. In addition, he is a member on the Small Scale Industries Board, Govt. of India, the Board of Trade of the Commerce Ministry and the National Advisory Committee of SIDBI. Mr Sakthivel is also Director of New Tirupur Development Corporation. He also holds the positions of Chairman of the India Knit Fair Association and President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore.

TEA Welcomes Power Holiday

The Tirupur Exporters’ Association has welcomed the Government’s announcement declaring weekly power holiday for Tirupur on Sunday. A release from the association said scheduled power cut would be helpful for the units as the industries would be able to make necessary arrangements.

President of the association A. Sakthivel said the board was taking more than two-and-a-half months to make payments to units that supply wind power to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board grid. Further, the low tension units were not permitted to have captive consumption wind power. The association sought remedial measures on these issues. It also appealed to the Minister to appoint the required number of staff in the Superintending Engineer’s office at Tirupur to cater to revenue-related matters immediately.

KPR's 2nd Phase Of Expansion

Coimbatore-based KPR Mill Limited, an integrated apparel company, has started the second phase of its capacity expansion programme. A release from the company said some of the works planned under the second phase were expansion of garment facility at Arasur, an additional hostel for workers, a design studio for garment operations, new knitting facility, doubling the capacity of the processing division and establishing a compact spinning facility at a total cost of Rs. 121 crore.

The design studio, with machinery imported from the U.S., and the knitting facility were already operational. The release added that during the fourth quarter of 2007-2008, the net sales of the company increased by 28.3 per cent and net profit by 81.2 per cent. “Our model is changing gradually in favour of a more garment-led operation,” P. Nataraj, Managing Director of the mill, said.

Tirupur Residents Demand

Residents complaining about poor water supply in Ward 19 to Tirupur Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan (left) on Thursday. Residents of Ward 19 of the Tirupur Corporation laid siege to the office of Commissioner M. Ashokan on Thursday to demand repairs to a bore well and steps to streamline the supply of drinking water.

Residents of Mettupalayam said in a petition to the Commissioner that about 500 families had been suffering disruption in the supply of bore well water in their area. The motor had developed problems, but these had not been set right despite representations to the local body.The residents also complained that drinking water was supplied to their areas only once in eight days. This was because of the supply being made only under the third water scheme.The second scheme should also be used so that supply was made at least once in four days.

The residents’ protest was led by Communist Party of India councillor from Ward 19 S. Velusamy. He said the Corporation should make alternate supply of water from the second and third schemes. Only then would once-in-four-days supply be possible.“People also complain that the quality of water supplied under the third scheme was bad. The residents say they develop pain in the throat when they drink this water, especially when it is stored for too long,” he said.

The number of water connections had risen from 1,000 to 2,000 in a year in the ward. But, there was no increase in the quantity of water supply. Therefore, when supply was made, there not much force in it. Mr. Velusamy said the Commissioner had promised to take immediate steps to solve all the problems the residents faced.

Exporters welcome formation of Tirupur Dist

Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) on Thursday thanked Tamil Nadu government for formation of a new District, with Tirupur as headquarters. Welcoming the budget, TEA president, A Shaktivel in a statement said the formation of new Tirupur district would certainly boost the progress of Tirupur region, especially the garment sector.

Thanking Finance Minister, K Anbazhagan and Local Administration minister, M K Stalin for fulfilling the long standing request of TEA, Shaktivel also welcomed the inclusion of Tirupur under the scheme of Tamil Nadu Urban Roads Development Project for upgradation of Roads, which was the need of the hour.

He lauded the proposal for implementation of E-district programme in five district collectorates including Coimbatore and expressed hope that this would be extended and introduced in the new Tirupur district also. Shaktivel also welcomed the reduction of tax on generators used for producting electricity.
