Officials sensitised to birth, death registration

fficials from various departments were sensitised on the seriousness to be shown on Birth and Death registrations at a meeting chaired by District Collector P. Umanath on Saturday.

The meeting was presided by District Revenue Officer and District Births and Deaths Registrar, S. Moorthy and Assistant Director of Health Services, P. Duraisamy, Tahsildars, Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Chief Education Officer, Sanitary Inspectors, police officials.

Collector reminded the officials that births and deaths should be registered 100 per cent as per Section 18 of the Central Birth and Death Registration Act of 1969 and Tamil Nadu Births and Deaths Rule 2000.

Birth and Death Registration offices should have a name board, Mr. Moorthy said.

Police recruitment exam on th Oct

Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, N. Kannan has announced that call letters for the written examination to be conducted by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board on October 25 for second graded constables have been despatched.

The call letters were despatched on October 8 in the self-addressed envelopes provided by the candidates in the application form.Those who do not receive their call letters/hall tickets by October 19 are requested to approach the office of the Superintendent of Police on Railway Station Road with proof for application and obtain copies of the call letters.

The examination would be held on October 25 at the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.

Instructions

Candidates should be seated in the hall by 9 a.m. Candidates should use only black or blue colour ink ball point pen and should bring a writing pad.Candidates should have signed on the photograph on the call letters. Those without call letters would not be permitted to write the examination.

Candidates should not carry with them electronic gadgets such as cellular phones, cameras, calculators etc. to the examination hall.

Water scheme for Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli may be completed in Dec.

The combined drinking water supply scheme for Kavundampalayam Municipality and Vadavalli Town Panchayat may be commissioned in December this year, according to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.Called the Bhavani Scheme, as water will be drawn from River Bhavani, it will augment supply in the growing suburbs of Vadavalli and Kavundampalayam. The Board is confident of completing all the works by December. It says the works to lay pipes and construct tanks are in full swing, with most of these in final stages.

According to Superintending Engineer, Coimbatore and The Nilgiris, P. Velusamy, most of the works were close to completion and there are plans to carry out a test supply of raw water next month.Announced in 1999 along with the Aliyar Scheme for Kurichi and Kuniamuthur and the Pilloor Phase II scheme for the Coimbatore Corporation areas, the Bhavani Scheme has been designed to provide 2.86 million litres of water a day (mld) to Vadavalli in 2011 and 5.74 mld to Kavundampalayam. In 2036, the supply will be 5.32 mld and 12.6 mld respectively, says Executive Engineer of TWAD Board, Urban Division- Coimbatore, M.S. Manoharan.

“Almost 95 per cent of the head works such as intake well and 98 per cent of the works for laying the raw water pumping mains have been completed,” he says.“Besides, 80 per cent of the work on establishing a water treatment plant at Chellappanur is also over.”The establishing of booster pumping stations at Veerapandipirivu and Kavundampalayam is nearly over.

Out of the 15 overhead tanks at Kavundampalayam and Vadavalli, seven are for the municipality and eight for the town panchayat. Five tanks in Kavundampalayam and four in Vadavalli have been completed and the work on the others is at an advanced stage.Appreciating the Board’s intention to commission the scheme in December, Coimbatore Consumer Cause secretary K. Kathirmathiyon says at least this time the deadline should be met.

“Twice earlier, expectations of the scheme being completed quickly had been belied. There is need for more water, as the supply frequency has worsened from alternate days to once in 10 days,” he points out.

Sources in the Kavundampalayam Municipality and Vadavalli Town Panchayat say the new scheme will provide immense relief to the resource-starved local bodies. At present, the quantity of Siruvani water provided to them is inadequate compared to the rising population.Vadavalli itself is seeing an addition of 200 to 300 houses every year and there are already 6,000 to 6,500 water connections.The situation is tighter for Kavundampalayam, which is a much bigger local body. If not daily supply, the local bodies hope to at least provide alternate day supply with increased duration when the new scheme is commissioned.

NREGS implementation gets going good !

From being way behind in implementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme that aims to provide livelihood to the poor, Coimbatore District has now bettered the State’s overall performance in implementing the scheme, according to Collector P. Umanath.

The implementation of this scheme had been a problem in Coimbatore because of its economic status being better than that of the other regions in the State. Therefore, only 18 per cent to 20 per cent of the funds were used compared to 70 per cent to 75 per cent in the rest of the State, the Collector told presspersons on Sunday.

For the last one-and-a-half months, the administration had identified areas that were suitable for the beneficiaries, given Coimbatore’s economic status. As a result, Coimbatore’s utilisation of the allocated funds rose from 20 per cent to 80 per cent during this period.

As much as 95 per cent of the works were de-silting of ponds and canals and widening of existing roads or laying of new ones.

Welfare schemes

The Collector said 1.54 lakh colour television sets were distributed from January till this month under the free colour television scheme. This had achieved despite the process having been halted by the Lok Sabha eletions in April-May and the byelections to the Thondamuthur Assembly seat in August.As for the distribution of free gas stoves to the below poverty line families, 11,500 had been given away as against a target of 15,000 till this month.

Ration cards

Dr. Umanath said he would look into complaints of supply of items being stopped for some ration card holders though they had not been informed of the stop supply order of the Government for cards whose holders were not traceable during verification.As per Government instructions, stop supply order had been issued on 1.5 lakh cards and time had been given to the card holders to appeal against the order.The administration received 63,000 appeals, out of which about 10,000 were rejected. When the cards of those who did not respond to the opportunity to appeal were also rejected, some people appealed for more time.

An extension till June 30 this year led to 22,000 appeals being filed. Further extension by a month yielded only 2,000 appeals.Finally, 14,000 of those who appealed and the 60,000 who did not respond at all had their supplies stopped.A list of cardholders, those who appealed for the continuation of supply, those whose appeals were rejected and those who did not appeal at all would be displayed at the respective ration shops.

Health insurance

Dr. Umanath said that so far 39,000 people in the district had registered for coverage under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life –Saving Treatment.

TN sets 9 of blast convicts free

Nine convicts serving 13-year rigorous imprisonment in the Coimbatore serial blasts case that rocked the textile city on February 14, 1998, killing 58 persons, were released by the Tamil Nadu Government on Tuesday, to celebrate the conclusion of birth centenary celebrations of DMK founder and former Chief Minister CN Annadurai.

This is the second consecutive year that this Government has granted mass remission to prisoners as part of Anna’s birth centenary programme. Last year, 1400 prisoners, including life-term convicts, were released on September 15. Though this time, the number has been kept to 10 and only for fixed-term convicts who have already served 10 years in prison, release of prisoners associated with the ghastly Coimbatore blasts has come as a shock.

The announcement for the release of 10 fixed-term convicts already having served 10 years in prison was made on Monday evening through a press release, which stated that they would be released with the consent of the Tamil Nadu Governor, as per norm under Article 161 of the Constitution. But there was no mention of names. On Tuesday, 10 convicts, members of the banned Al-Umma which set off the serial blasts during the BJP leader LK Advani’s visit for election campaign, were released. They included Shahul Hameed, Abdul Rahman, Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, Abdul Farook, Yousuf, Abbas, Ashraf, Mohammed Farook and Abdul Rahoof. Yousuf alias Shahjahan, whose name was also in the list of 10 to be released, was not let out as he is facing trial in other cases, according to jail authorities.

It may be recalled that there were 19 blasts in Coimbatore, including one at one of the venues where Advani was to address a campaign meeting on February 14, 1998. A total of 166 persons were arrested in connection with the blasts.In October 2007, Special Court trying the serial blasts case had convicted those involved in the blasts under various sections of IPC, Explosives Act and Arms Act. Of these 43, including Al-Umma founder SA Basha and senior leader Mohammed Ansari, were given life term. Fifteen others were given 13-year RI, 10 were given 10-year term and two were given seven-year term.

Those released (serving 13-years RI) have been in prison since mid-1998 and therefore have completed a little more than 11 years. The authorities have also averred that prisoners are entitled to remission of 48 days for every year served on grounds of good conduct.However, Tuesday’s release would certainly rake up controversy as this involved the release of those termed as terrorists and members of a banned organisation. The antecedents of the convicts and the impact of their release are in question. Last year’s release of 1400 prisoners, including those serving life-term had attracted criticism. Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy had filed a PIL against the remissions, which is pending in the Supreme Court.

Since the Karunanidhi Government began action on the remission of prisoners, both Muslim and Hindu organisations had made a bee-line for the release of convicts on humanitarian grounds.
Following the Tuesday’s remission of blast convicts, the Puzhal Central Prison (Chennai) prisoners, numbering about 750, staged a demonstration demanding that when the State Government could release terrorists, it should release the prisoners in Puzhal immediately. They also criticised the release of the blast convicts. Only after the prison officials convinced them that their demand would be communicated to the Government, did the prisoners relent.

Khadi Minster is stable !

The condition of Khadi Minister K. Ramachandran is stable. He suffered a mild attack on Saturday.The Minister was under observation for three hours in the intensive care unit at K.G. Hospital here on Sunday and was shifted to a room in the evening, hospital chairman G. Bakthavathsalam told .

“This is an acute coronary syndrome, but does not require a surgery. He is stable and recovering,” he said.The Minister complained of pain in the shoulder and profuse sweating while participating in a function in Udhagamandalam on Saturday evening. He also had gastric problem. An electro cardiogram done on him immediately did not reveal any problem. He went home that day and got himself admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning for a thorough check-up. A cardiac computed tomography scan detected a block in an artery in the heart, Dr. Bakthavathsalam said. But, cardiologists Y.Y. Rao and C. Balasubramaniam, who examined the Minister and the scan images, said he need not have to undergo a bypass surgery or an angioplasty, as the block was below 40 per cent. This could be managed with drugs, they said.

Coimbatore textile institute to be upgraded !

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management in Coimbatore will be upgraded and renamed Indian School of Textiles, the government announced Thursday.“The school will engage itself in research and will also undertake comprehensive consultancy services for the industry,” Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran told reporters here.

He did not say when the upgrading would be complete or the institute become operational.The government also plans to build capacities for environment and social compliance with a view to capture overseas markets and meet global environmental standards.All this, Maran said, was part of the ministry’s agenda for the coming 265 days.

“After the successful completion of 100 days’ agenda, we have a huge task cut out before us to maximize productivity and welfare of stakeholders and tackle the issues affecting the holistic growth and development of textiles industry.”The ministry will also promote research and development in textiles sector including developing better handlooms to provide a “common technology platform” on commercial basis for promotion of new technologies to achieve value addition and product diversification.

Maran had said Aug 31 that an additional $1.5 billion of foreign exchange could be earned from the US market if there was a sustained effort.

Taking IT jobs to the rural youth

A private placement organised by the office of the Regional Deputy Director (Employment), Coimbatore resulted in nearly 60 candidates getting appointment orders.Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu in association with Employment Department, TAHDCO and private IT companies offered a ‘Rural Information Technology Finishing School’ programme to train the rural talents in IT applications.

As a follow up, a private placement meet was organised in Coimbatore on Tuesday wherein 15 companies offered 350 vacancies, said A. Latha, Regional Deputy Director of Employment.

Around 400 candidates from the districts of Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Karur and Salem participated in the job fair. Vacancies filled in were in the category of sales supervisors, technicians, data entry operators, marketing executives, accountants, office staff, assembling staff, business development executives, supervisors, hotel staffs, hospital staff, computer operators, desk top publishing operators etc.

The programme was held totally free of cost for both employers as well as candidates.Another unique feature is that candidates appointed through the job mela would not be cancelled by the respective district employment offices provided they keep renewing their employment exchange registrationsTheir names would also be sponsored as per seniority and eligibility for Government vacancies. The job fair that began around 10 a.m. ended around 4 p.m.

Minister for Information Technology Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Secretary to Government for Information Technology P.W.C. Davidar, Managing Director of ELCOT Santhosh Babu, District Collector P. Umanath and others gave away the appointment orders to the selected candidates and certificates to those who had completed the course.The minister exhorted the students to enhance their talents and capability to become employable.She said that there are opportunities and candidates as well but the employable talent was lacking.

She assured to improve the training module to meet the requirements of the industry.

Government slashes amenities charges

In what could be termed a major relief for developers and home buyers, the state government on Wednesday slashed infrastructure andbasic amenities charges by 50 to 75 per cent across various categories of buildings. The revised rates will come into effect from September 9, 2009. However, all projects which have been given approval, or for which demand notes have been raised by the regulatory agencies till Tuesday, will not stand to benefit. These projects will have to pay the amenities charges as per the earlier rates.

The biggest beneficiaries of the government's latest decision are people proposing to buy apartments in multi-storeyed buildings in Chennai and Chengalpet region, for whom, the amenities charge has been brought down from Rs 1,000 per sq metre to Rs 250 per sq metre. It works out to a reduction of roughly Rs 75 per sq ft. The revised rates will have to be paid upfront as a one-time payment for obtaining plan approval for buildings.

A government order issued in this regard on Wednesday pointed out that the government had taken into consideration the slump in the construction industry, dip in real estate sales and high rates of interest for housing loans while taking such a decision.

The revised infrastructure charges for various categories of buildings are as follows: for multi-storeyed buildings which are commercial, IT, industrial or institutional in nature or that have a combination of such activities, the levy is Rs 500 per sq metre in Chennai and Chengalpet region. In Coimbatore and Tirupur region, the amenities charge for multi-storeyed buildings is Rs 375 per sq metre and in other regions it is Rs 250 per sq metre.

For multi-storeyed residential buildings across the state, a uniform infrastructure charge of Rs 250 per sq metre is applicable. For non-multi-storeyed commercial, IT, group development or special buildings (either ground-plus-three floors or stilt-plus-four floors) amenities charge is Rs 250 per sq metre in Chennai and Chengelpet region, Rs 190 per sq metre in Coimbatore and Tirupur and Rs 125 per sq metre in other regions.

For institutional buildings which are not multi-storeyed, the levy is Rs 100 per sq metre in Chennai and Chengalpet region, Rs 75 per sq metre in Coimbatore and Tirupur and Rs 50 per sq metre in other areas.

For non-multi-storeyed industrial buildings the amenities charge is Rs 150 per sq metre in Chennai and Chengalpet, Rs 112.5 per sq metre in Coimbatore and Tirupur and Rs 75 per sq metre in other areas.

Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India Tamil Nadu chapter president Prakash Challa, while welcoming the move, said, "We will directly pass on the benefit to the customers. We thank the government for heeding to our request. But we are disappointed that the government has not given retrospective effect to the GO. It will lead to unnecessary litigation because in our state a planning process takes two years. Buildings which were planned three years ago, when no such infrastructure charge was there, had to pay the levy because by the time their approvals came, the government had introduced the amenities charge. Hence, the benefit being given to new buildings should be extended to all projects which were cleared since April 8, 2008 (when the previous GO was issued).

Corp Will Levy Vacant Land Tax

The Coimbatore Corporation will levy tax on vacant lands only on a square feet basis across the city instead of the present system of a percentage of the market value of the lands in each area. An all-party meeting of the Corporation on Monday discussed this proposal made in the Third State Finance Commission’s recommendations and this would be formally recorded in the Corporation Council at its next meeting.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra, Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, officials and leaders of various parties in the council took part. The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department said in an order dated August 20, 2009 that the levy of tax on vacant lands should be on the basis of a rate per square foot fixed by the government instead of the capital value of the lands. The laws or rules relating to the municipal corporations (other than Chennai) and municipalities had been amended and the amended ones took effect on September 1, this year. The amended rules were now called the Tamil Nadu Town Panchayats, Third Grade Municipalities, Municipalities and Municipal Corporations (Levy of Property Tax on Vacant Lands) Rules, 2009.

The order said the rates had been fixed for three categories of urban local bodies. They were:
A Grade: municipal corporations and special grade municipalities; B Grade: selection grade and first grade municipalities and C Grade: second grade and third grade municipalities and town panchayats. The all-party meeting also approved the Corporation’s proposal to insist on submission of building plans and payment of development charges along with these in order to get buildings assessed for Property Tax. The assessment for tax would be made even if the plans were rejected, Mr. Mishra said after the meeting.

SP Issued Guidelines For Cattle Transport

Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, N. Kannan has issued a set of guidelines to truck operators who transport cattle to various places within the State and across the border.

Mr. Kannan said that transporters should obtain a certificate from a veterinarian that the cattle were fit for transportation. There should be a first aid box in the truck. . Those travelling in the truck should be in possession of details of the cattle owner and the intended recipient. , Cattle/livestock in advanced stages of pregnancy should not be transported with other cattle. There should not be more than six livestock in one single truck and every truck should have adequate cattle feed and water. In the event of violation of any of these guidelines the cattle and the trucks would be confiscated.

Water quality monitoring at major river basins

Central Water Commission (CWC) under Ministry of Water Resources monitors water quality at the key locations covering all the major river basins of the country. It has a three-tier laboratory system for analysis of the parameters for monitoring.The Level – I laboratories are located at 258 field water quality-monitoring stations on major rivers of India. The physical parameters such as temperature, colour, odour, specific conductivity, total dissolved solids, pH and dissolved oxygen of river water are observed in these laboratories.

The Level-II laboratories located at 24 selected divisional headquarters to analyse 25 physico-chemical characteristics and bacteriological parameters of the river water. The Level–III/II+ laboratories are located at 4 places namely Varanasi, Delhi, Hyderabad and Coimbatore. 41 parameters including heavy elements/toxic parameters and pesticides are analysed periodically in these laboratories.

CWC computerizes the data generated in the Data base system and disseminates in the form of Hydrological Year Book and Status Reports. Water Quality yearbooks are published and water quality bulletins also issued regularly.

Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency to work with sago units

The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) will work with the sago units in Namakkal and Rasipuram areas to help them install biogas plants.Chairman and managing director of TEDA R. Christodas Gandhi said about 100 units in the belt had already installed biogas plants. Another 50 proposed to invest in similar projects. “We have already started talks with them,” he said here on Friday, inaugurating a two-day conference on “Renewable Energy in Pulp and Paper Mills” organised by the Indian Agro and Recycled Paper Mills’ Association.

A.K. Dhussa, director in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, explained that there were two aspects to these projects. One was production of biogas from industrial waste and the other was power generation from biogas. The Union Government provided Rs. 50 lakh subsidy for production of 12,000 cubic metre of gas (one MW equivalent) and Rs. 1 crore subsidy for generation of one MW from the biogas. The region had about 450 sago industries and the potential for energy production from the waste in these units was 60 MW. Mr. Gandhi suggested that the agency could work with the paper industry too to help the sector tap the renewable energy potential. “We can work together regarding investment patterns, technology and consultancy.”

The solar energy scenario in the country would explode with the implementation of the Solar Mission.In Tamil Nadu about 25 per cent of the total energy generation was from wind. The shortage of 20 to 30 per cent faced now could be made up by tapping the potential in solar.The State Governments were likely to come out with their policies for solar energy after the Centre announced the Solar Mission, he said.

Mr. Dhussa said the pulp and paper industry had the potential to generate nearly 60 MW from industrial waste. The units generated solid and liquid waste. The solid waste could be burnt and power could be generated from the liquid waste through biomethanation. Technology and Government support was available for this.The units would save on the waste treatment cost. During the last three years, nearly 45 biomass gasifier projects with nearly 60 MW thermal capacity and 20 gasifier projects for power generation had been installed in the country.

ESIC medical college @ CBE !

The State’s first Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College that offers undergraduate and paramedical courses such as nursing and pharmacy would come up at the ESI hospital complex at Varadarajapuram near here. Dr B Mohamed Ali, medical superintendent of ESI Hospital, told Express that the proposed medical college would offer undergraduate and paramedical courses while the Aynavaram ESI Hospital in Chennai would offer post-graduate courses.

The groundwork for the proposed medical college is almost over as a team from Medical Council of India (MCI) had visited the complex and inspected the site where the ESIC medical college is to be constructed, he said. Even the Local Planning Authority in Coimbatore has given its plan approval for construction of medical college inside the ESI Hospital complex.

Work is moving at a faster pace as the structural feasibility study is underway. The Union Labour Ministry, under which the ESIC comes, would float a tender on August 24 in New Delhi, he added. The medical college with the state-of-the-art facility would be set up on one lakh-odd sq m at an estimated cost of Rs 420 crore, he said, adding that the joint director of ESIC (sub-regional office in Coimbatore) is the nodal agency for the college project.

“It has been planned to shift the mortuary and demolish the existing ‘C’ type staff quarters during phase-II of construction of the medical college complex. A student hostel also forms part of the medical college project,” Ali stated. He added that the entire project would be executed by Union Labour Ministry since ESIC comes under its ambit.

And MCI norms of minimum standard requirements for medical college would be strictly adhered to by ESIC while initiating the project, he said. As per the proposed plan, the department of anatomy on 3,400 sq m would come up on the ground floor and the department of bio-chemistry and community medicine on the fi rst floor. The second floor would accommodate the department of physiology, department of microbiology and the department of pharmacology.

The administration block would come up in phase I. Similar ESIC medical colleges would be established in Kerala and Karnataka in the next phase.

Inordinate delay in Irugur line doubling criticised

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has criticised the inordinate delay in completing the railway line doubling work between Coimbatore and Irugur, which has been dragging on for the last 13 years.In a memorandum to the general manager of Southern Railway and Commissioner of Land Administration, Government of Tamil Nadu, CCC Secretary K. Kathirmathiyon said that because of the single line track between Coimbatore North and Irugur, the arrival of most of the trains from Chennai was getting delayed.More trains between Coimbatore and Erode could not be operated.

In addition, a number of important trains on the Kerala – Chennai sector were being diverted at Irugur to Podanur and vice-verca thus skipping the Coimbatore Junction.The doubling of track for 16.6 km between Irugur and Coimbatore North was actually approved and included in the budget in 1996 with an estimated cost of Rs. 37.94 crore and the cost was revised.During August 2006, the Railways had announced that nearly 75 per cent of the work was completed and promised to complete the work by March 2008.

After March 2008, the consumer body was informed that the work would be completed before August 2009. Now the Railway has undertaken the construction of bridge works, which will take a few more months.The State Government had almost completed the acquisition formalities in respect of 36 cents at Ganapathy.But still, the 1.07 acres to be acquired between Irugur and Peelamedu would take a long time.

Originally, the area was under Palladam taluk (now Tirupur district) under the jurisdiction of Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirupur. Now the area had come under the jurisdiction of Sulur taluk, i.e. RDO, Coimbatore. Based on Railways request in February 2009, the RDO, Coimbatore, had sent the proposal to the government for administrative sanction.But lot of formalities had to be completed for the purpose and it may likely take a minimum period of another 18 months.

Only after that, the Railways could carry out the remaining work.Further, the shifting of a temple on the platform of Peelamedu Railway Station remains to be sorted out.Even though the original estimate was Rs.37.94 crore, nearly Rs. 53.39 crore was spent so far out of the Rs.55 crore allotted.But still, the work could not be completed.

Tight Scurity For Independence Day

A tight security cordon is being thrown around Coimbatore City and its peripheral areas as a precautionary measure for the Independence Day celebrations on Saturday. The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Pramod Kumar has drawn up an elaborate bandobust plan to be implemented under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Nagarajan (Law and Order) and N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic).

The arrangements are only preventive and precautionary in nature and there had been no ‘pointed intelligence’ or threat perception for Coimbatore.Security measures will be in force from Thursday late night and the measures would partially continue till the completion of Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations. A total of 23 mobile patrol vehicles and armed men on 33 bike patrols, strengthened check posts at 12 places on all arterial and feeder roads, and pickets by armed policemen at ten sensitive places will form part of the security arrangements.

As many as 25 vital installations will come under armed security cover and armed guards were being posted for nine police quarters in the City. Statues of 13 national leaders are being brought under armed security. Vigil will also be maintained at places of worship. Vhicle checks and lodge checks were being stepped up. Airport, railway stations, bus stands and places of public congregation including shopping areas are also coming under round-the-clock vigil.

Police personnel equipped with binoculars will be stationed atop high rise buildings around VOC Park to form part of the ‘aerial surveillance’ during the Independence day celebrations. Anti-Sabotage Teams (AST) of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and Fire Tenders were being kept ready. A total of 1,000 police personnel will be on security duty till the completion of Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations.

The bandobust measures are being supervised by the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, N. Kannan and the DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, B. Bala Naga Devi in Coimbatore Range. Enhanced focus is being paid to sensitive pockets in Mettuppalayam and Pollachi. Vehicle checks have been stepped up in rural police limits as well.

Steps To Remove Advertisements On Buses

The Transport Department has directed Regional Transport Officers to take expeditious steps to remove advertisements put up on buses without proper approval, within two months from August 17. The directive comes in the wake of the judgment of the Madras High Court on August 6 on a writ petition filed by Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC). K. Kathirmathiyon, in his plea, had prayed for the removal of such advertisements as it endangered road safety by distracting the attention of motorists.

He pointed out that these advertisements had come in violation of relevant Motor Vehicle Rules and without proper permission from competent authorities. The State Transport Corporation, in its letter to Zonal Joint and Deputy Transport Commissioners, has asked them to ensure that the respective Road Transport Officers made arrangements to remove all illegal advertisements from the exteriors of private and public transport vehicles as stipulated in Rule 343 of the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 within two months. The same was communicated to RTOs in Coimbatore circle on Wednesday and vehicles carrying such advertisements were being identified now.
