Coimbatore Corporation found quick way to fill potholes

Bitumen paste to fill potholes
The entire process is over in half-an-hour
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation seems to have found a quick-fire way to get around the problem of potholes on the city roads. No more waiting to get enough workers or equipment and no need to look around for contractors. A new bitumen paste available in bags is now an instant recipe for doing away with the potentially fatal potholes.

In a demonstration of how the new method and material works, the Coimbatore Corporation's engineers filled a pothole on the road leading to the Ukkadam Bus Stand from Town Hall on Monday without facing the need to close traffic. The entire process was over in half-an-hour and vehicles rode over the filled pothole.Provided by a Chennai-based company, it is a modified form of liquid asphalt with chemical anti-stripping additives. It contains tested gravel that, along with the additives, forms a `cold patch'.

Coimbatore Mayor R. Venkatachalam said after the demonstration that this could be used to fill the potholes on the roads in the city to immediately remove the dangers these posed to vehicle users. The normal process that involves inviting bids for patchworks -- usually for Rs.50,000 -- takes a lot of time. The bitumen paste would be far less time consuming.

A Corporation engineer said that the normal bitumen cost the civic body Rs.25 a sq.ft. of patchwork. The new bitumen paste would cost only Rs.20. And, one kg of the material was required to fill a sq.ft. of pothole.
