Coimbatore Best In Implementation Of Scheme

Coimbatore district has excelled among all the districts in the implementation of Anna Renaissance Scheme for the town panchayats, said Collector V. Palanikumar recently. Chairing the meeting of the monitoring committee to supervise the implementation of the schemes in town panchayats, Mr. Palanikumar pointed out that the State Government had allocated Rs. 50 lakh for every town panchayat for provision of basic infrastructure such as cement roads, black-topped roads, office room constructions, community halls, shops and upkeep of burial and cremation grounds.

For the fiscal year 2007-2008, the government allocated Rs. 6.50 crore for as many as 13 town panchayats and Rs. 8.50 crore was mobilised from other departments such as highways and tourism for carrying out department-related works in select town panchayats. The State Government was concentrating on provision of basic infrastructure in almost all the local bodies irrespective of their status such as panchayats, panchayat unions, town panchayats, municipalities and corporations.



The scheme was implemented in 13 town panchayats and was reviewed periodically by the Local Administration Minister. In the second phase, 26 remaining town panchayats would be allotted funds. Mr. Palanikumar said that the objective of the meeting was to monitor the implementation of the schemes and co-ordinate other development works and to prepare a list of identified schemes and forward the same with recommendations to the Director of Town Panchayats for getting the necessary administrative sanction. He exhorted the officials and elected representatives to come up with schemes taking into account the long-term requirements.
