Steps On To Decongest Traffic

The State Highways Department seems to be finally embarking on a mission to pursue its proposal to widen and strengthen four arterial roads aimed at decongesting the city. With already over 8 lakh vehicles registered in the two Regional Transport Offices in the city, there is a floating population of vehicles used by the visitors as well.

In addition, on an average 500 vehicles were getting added on to the city roads every day.

This had resulted in Coimbatore racing ahead in competing with the metros and semi -metros for a prime position in respect of chaotic traffic conditions. With vehicular population increasing in manifold and road space shrinking, there was a pertinent need to widen the arterial roads. The Highways Department has now mooted a proposal to widen four arterial roads under the project “Improvements in Corporation limits”.

When contacted, the Superintending Engineer of the Highways, N.T. Krishnamoorthy, confirmed that a proposal to this effect was under consideration and preliminary works for removal of encroachments were being worked out by the Divisional Engineer (Highways), K. Vellingiri.
