Tamil Nadu Agriculture University is taking steps to face the challenge of a rice dealer obtaining the ‘ponni’ trademark for a rice variety in Malaysia. “Vice-Chancellor C. Ramasamy has informed that ‘improved white ponni’ is a variety released by the university in 1986. A few days ago, a dealer in Malaysia obtained a trademark in the name of ‘ponni.’ It is a trademark, and not patent.” a statement by the university said. The university was consulting legal experts, it said.
