TNAU recommends rice variety
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has recommended use of CORH 3 hybrid rice variety for cultivation in the Kuruvai season that begins in June and ends in September. According to a release, the Kuruvai season marks the commencement of the agricultural season in Tamil Nadu wherein paddy is sown in the Cauvery delta zone, Thamiraparani and Periyar Vaigai command areas. Around five lakh hectares is expected to be covered under rice this season.Considering the importance of the season, TNAU has recommended the CORH 3 hybrid variety for its high-yielding potential. The hybrid matures in 115 days and gives an average yield of over 3,000 kg an acre. In most cases, it has surpassed 4,000 kg an acre.
It is found to have a definite edge over popular varieties like ADT36, ADT43, ADT45 and ASD16 in terms of yield. Also, the hybrid is said to be of acceptable cooking quality. It is resistant to many common insect pests and diseases like Brown Plant Hopper and Blast respectively. Three years of testing under various growing conditions has found that the hybrid withstands abiotic stress factors such as cold, drought, salt and floods. Under favourable growing conditions, a net return of more than Rs. 35,000 an acre is expected from cultivation of this hybrid.
