Distribution Of 5 Lakh Saplings
The Project Vrikshabhumi of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore has stepped up distribution of five lakh saplings to the citizens of Coimbatore.President of the Club K. Sundharamoorthy and Secretary V. Mohandoss pointed out that the objective of the project was to distribute five lakh saplings free of cost to the people of Coimbatore in order to enhance the green cover. Last year the plan was to distribute one lakh saplings in 100 days but the project owing to overwhelming support of the citizens witnessed distribution of two lakh saplings in 125 days.
The project was aimed at creating awareness in the minds of the citizens of Coimbatore especially the student community and to inspire them to collect saplings out of their own interest and nurture them.Mr. Sundharamoorthy and V. Mohandas said that 50 distribution centres all over Coimbatore were opened at places such as cinema halls, petrol outlets, grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, educational institutions where people frequented more. Large banners were displayed at these centres to attract people. Rotary had opened two stock yards in the centre of City, where the saplings are stocked. Every individual was being given two saplings along with a detailed catalogue about the specie and the process of nurturing these saplings.
The project was being promoted through slides in cinema halls and by participating in various exhibitions being held across the city. The objective was to distribute five lakh saplings before the target date.
