Passport Office at Coimbatore Creating Records

The hardly two-month-old Passport Office at Coimbatore is creating records of sorts by issuing more than 5,000 passports within 45 working days. The Coimbatore Passport Officer, B. Balamurugan, said that in September alone 2,651 applications were received under the Tatkal category and nearly 2,362 passports had been issued. Under the ordinary category, the passport office had received 7,431 applications and had issued 2,689 passports.
In cases where proof of urgency was produced, passports were issued on the same day under the tatkal category. Mr. Balamurugan said that applicants under tatkal category were being given passports within seven working days. Under the ordinary category, passports were being issued in ten working days after getting police verification.

The difference in the number of applications received and passports issued under the ordinary category was primarily because of the time involved in sending the application for police verification and getting the verification reports. The passport office has helped in providing rehabilitation through employment for the physically challenged persons. The District Rehabilitation Officer, C. Jasmine, had identified the persons for the job of operating computers on the passport office premises.
