Action against Sale of sub-standard seeds

In 2008-09, 2,730 tonnes of sub-standard seeds costing Rs. 6.24 crore were stopped from selling in Tamil Nadu, as a result of intensive seed law enforcement activities.According to a release from K. Rangasamy, Director of Seed Certification, Coimbatore, seed inspectors under the Seed Inspection Wing were frequently inspecting the seed selling points and taking samples of seed lots that were ready for distribution, to check seed quality parameters.

Action

Legal action had been initiated against 484 companies that have sold sub-standard seeds.Action had also been taken against those who had failed to meet the prescribed standards of ermination and genetic purity according to the guidelines of the Union Government.The director also added that quality of seeds supplied to farmers was also being monitored in an effective way.

Supply

In order to meet the need of farmers for quality seeds at the right time, he said in 2009-10 also strict seed quality control activities were being planned to ensure supply of quality seeds to them.
