"Now the corporate pharmacies are dominating in the metros. So, we thought of starting pharmacies in the peripheral areas and small towns because the demand for medicine is more in those areas too and not many corporate pharmacies venture there," said Dr A M Arun, chairman of Vasan Healthcare Group, speaking to Pharmabiz.
Speaking about their ventures into the hospital segment, Vasan said, Vasan Eye Care Hospital had entered into a joint venture with Prems' Eye Clinic to launch 10 hospitals in its chain and the first one will be in Chennai. The hospital will be launched during January 2007. The centre will be known under the brand name of Vasans Eye Care Hospitals-Associate: Prems' Eye Clinic.
He said that Vasans Group was planning to launch seven more hospitals in Chennai before July 2007. The total investment into this venture would be around Rs 45 crore. The capital will be invested by Vasans Eye Care Hospitals and Dr Prems Eye Clinic will be bringing in the brand goodwill.
"Today there are stand-alone centres offering good eye care in many cities. However, a large number of people look for reliable eye care in their neighbourhood itself and end up going to small clinics. Our plan is to fill this need by bringing a chain of eye care centres close to them. We are looking at one centre per 8 lakh population," said Arun.
The Chennai network with 25 ophthalmic surgeons, with Dr Prems' Eye Clinic, will scale up to 70 specialists when the 8 centres are fully operational. The Chennai hospital will provide services in advanced cataract and refractive surgery, vitreo retinal surgery, glaucoma and neuro ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmology. There will be speciality clinics for aged, children and computer professionals at suitable hours. The advanced research will be conducted on stem cell transplantation, ocular pathology and uvea.
The Vasan Eye Care Hospitals network will also spread to other cities across South India shortly. Madurai, Coimbatore, Vellore and Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore and Belgaum in Karnataka are the next few centres in pipeline. They also have plans to expand their presence in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkatta
.
