To offer diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses related to healthcare
COIMBATORE: Professional paramedical centres of the Bharathiar University will be created at hospitals. They will offer diploma, post-diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in clinical, administrative and training programmes related to health care, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, said here on Saturday.
This would be as an effort to include technical courses in the purview of the university curriculum, he added.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) for the first batch of 11 who received certificates for MS in Health and Hospital Administration, he said that not just memoranda of understanding, but partnerships between universities alone, would bring in the desired kind of output.
"Partnerships will enable sharing of existing educational materials, equipment, research and development activities and manpower. Such partnerships should cross the barriers of disciplines for optimum application of knowledge. Education should cross borders. Only then can the health care needs of one billion people be met, " he added.
Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman of KMCH, said that the co-ordinated two-year course between KMCH and Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia, had produced the first batch of 11 successful post-graduates who were pioneers in their area of work.
Pointing out that the healthcare industry was expanding at the rate of 35 per cent, he told the post-graduates that there was enormous potential for them to achieve.
He urged them to be socially responsible and ethical in their professional life.
John J. Newhouse, Chair Programme Director, Health Administration of Saint Joseph's University, said that very few industries could claim such a high level of commitment as that of the healthcare industry.
"The desire to always do the best for your patients, families and colleagues has defined the hospital and healthcare field as a human services industry," he said.
Mr. Newhouse urged the fresh post-graduates to work together and collaborate to address and solve both clinical and administrative issues that would bring about the success of the hospital and healthcare fields.
