Coimbatore could be converted into a planned city
Built up area concession to other sectors on anvilThe Government is considering extending the 100 per cent built-up area concession given to the IT sector, to other sectors also, Tamil Nadu Information and Town Planning Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said.
Coimbatore, being an important industrial and IT city, the Government would soon announce a special new set of 'Development Control Rules,' Ilamvazhuthi said.
He was speaking after inaugurating a conference on 'Urban Planning and Construction for the future Con Next2007, organised by CII here.
A new master plan for Coimbatore city would be released soon, by which the city could be converted into a planned city, he said, adding the department was implementing 270 schemes to regularise the city's development.
In his address, Jayakumar Ramadass, chairman of local CII chapter, said the Indian construction industry was all set to become a $180 billion sector by 2020 from the present size of $50 billion. This projection was made on the assumption of a 6-7 per cent annual growth for the domestic construction industry, Jayakumar said.
He urged the Government to have a separate entity, may be the Coimbatore Development Authority, on the lines of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, to focus on the infrastructural development of region, implement the plans on a timely basis and speedy redressal of issues for clearing bottlenecks
