Six-laning in Avanishi Road
Coimbatore: The local CII chapter today expressed happiness over the allotment of Rs.27 crore by Tamil Nadu government for six-laning of 16 km stretch between Neelambur bypass and Uppilipalayam on Main Arterial Avanashi Road. In a release, Nandini Rangaswamy, convenor, CII Avinashi Road Project, said the road connected Coimbatore to all the major towns and cities and served as the main road from which other roads originated and linked various parts of the city.
The CII-Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation study had revealed that more than 75,000 motor vehicles plied every day and more than 25,000 school children and college students used the road daily, she said.
N Krishna Samaraj, co-convenor of the project, said with the opening up of the textile sector, the knitwear manufacturers of Tirupur and Coimbatore were expected to double their business in two years, he said.
The project has come at the right time when the city is on the threshold of an economic boom, as the Tidel park, proposed luxury hotels, retail outlets and the entertainment centres would make Avinashi Road even more congested, he said.
Though the total cost of the project was estimated to be rs.130 crore, involving a comprehensive development plan, the initial allocation would take care of the immediate needs, Jayakumar Ramadass, immediate past chairman of CII, said.
