5 Prisoners realeased boz of Golden Jubilee celebrations
A total of 27 life convicts in the State, five among them in Coimbatore, were released on Friday in view of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in the State Assembly.Those set free in Coimbatore were Ravi alias Viswanathan, son of Chinnaraj, Nagarajan, son of Veeranam, Mohammad Haji, son of Syed Allaudin Haji of Kerala, Arumuga Nainar, son of Samy Thevar of Kanyakumari and Viswanathan, son of Karuppasamy, said Superintendent of Prisons, Coimbatore Central Prison S Rajendran.Special Public Prosecutor (Human Rights Cases) V Kannadasan told this website’s newspaper that last year, during Arignar Anna’s birth anniversary, 100 prisoners, who completed 10 years of actual imprisonment, were released.But these five life convicts were not lucky then since they were charged under Section 224 of the IPC (escape from lawful custody).Those who fail to turn up after their parole period are booked under Section 224. He pointed out that out of the five prisoners, two of them, Haji and Viswanathan had already served 20 years in prison while the other three have been in prison for 18 years.In 1997, a total of 224 prisoners were released during the birth anniversary of Arignar Anna, he said and added that only now the prisoners charged under the section were being released. It is understood that the government would be providing some kind of assistance by way of bank loans to help these prisoners.
Out of the five, two were from Coimbatore district and one from Erode. Ravi expressed his wish to buy an auto, Nagarajan is interested in setting up a dairy farm and Viswanathan is interested in starting an eatery. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, P Munivelu and Superintendent Rajendran have been instrumental in the release of the five prisoners, said Kannadasan.
