Yoga for Municipal officials of Coonoor

Udhagamandalam: Having been used to the routine of either pushing files or dealing with civic problems for years together, many of the Municipal officials at Coonoor spent the last five days in a refreshingly different manner thanks to an initiative of the Municipal Commissioner Paapa Mayazhagu and the Chairman, Coonoor Municipal Council M.Ramasamy.

About 72 of the municipal employees participated in a yoga programme conducted daily by professionals from Bangalore between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 5.45 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.Pointing out that it had done a world of good to many of the participants, Ms.Mayazhagu told The Hindu on Saturday that in addition to doing the different forms of exercise associated with yoga, the beneficiaries who were in the age range 25-50 also did a good amount of meditation.Stating that the programme was utilised to break different forms of work place barriers, she said that they were also taken to Grace Hill near Coonoor for a change of scene.In the process, they got to know each other better.

The programme helped change the mental make up of many, she said.They now realise that with good team work the municipality could function better.One of the beneficiaries of the yoga scheme, Ishwari, said that the programme had helped her in many ways. She was now able relax without making an effort.At the valedictory function that was held here on Saturday, Ms.Mayazhagu advised the beneficiaries of the programme to continue their yoga exercises at home and continue the benefits of the activity, so that they would remain healthy.Urging them to strike a balance between domestic and official priorities, she said that they should keep an eye on their health.Their attitude towards life should always be positive, so that they could remain in good health.A follow up programme was likely to be organised for the beneficiaries during the third week of July.
