Drive to rid the city of plastics
Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran told presspersons on Sunday that the civic body would revive the drive to rid the city of plastics, especially the non-recyclable carry bags that were discarded in public places. An intensive drive would soon begin across the city and it could include even seizure of bags from shops selling or storing it, the Mayor said.
The announcement of the drive came as a reaction to the sight of plastic bags dominating the garbage yard at Vellore, with a substantial number clinging on to every shrub or tree.A net would be put up for a km around the yard to prevent these bags from being carried by wind into the residential colonies, the Commissioner said. The Mayor said people should co-operate by shunning plastic bags.“Why cannot they buy commodities in paper or cloth bag? If they continue to use plastic bags, the drive will not be successful,” the Mayor said. The Commissioner said the civic body would buy a micron meter to test plastic bags so that those below 20 microns could be weeded out from the city.
