Cement worker's strike put hold

Cement workers’ trade unions, which have a charter of demands including payment of Rs. 60,000 to each worker in the cement manufacturing units, will decide the future course of action after March 19.The other demands are to reopen the closed units and to make the workers on contract basis in production-related works as permanent employees.

Unions had called for a nation-wide one-day strike

N. Nanjappan, general secretary of the INTUC Cement Workers’ Federation, told presspersons here on Thursday that the unions had called for a nation-wide one-day strike on January 24 seeking action on these demands.Following this, the Chief Commissioner of the Central Labour Department invited the unions and the cement manufacturers’ association for talks on January 21.He had given a month’s time for the manufacturers to get back with their response for the demands of the unions.

Another meeting was held in Delhi on February 20.The managements’ association sought one more month.Though the unions had objected, the Labour Commissioner accepted the demand and postponed the meeting to March 17.So, it was decided by the union to decide the future course of action after the March meeting, he explained.
