Fluid draining procedure for 101 yr old man

A 101-year-old man went into coma but was revived through a fluid draining procedure on his brain at a hospital here.S Sethurama Iyer from Karur, about 400 km south of Chennai, fell from his bed and went into coma.Blood had accumulated between his brain and the membrane that covers it. The patient went into coma as a result of this fluid accumulation. The condition is called chronic subdural haematoma, the KG hospital said in a press release here on Tuesday.

A team of doctors, led by chief neurosurgeon M Natarajan, operated upon the old man last week.They performed a procedure called 'Burr hole drainage' to take out the accumulated fluid from the brain.The patient is recovering well and is expected to leave hospital next week.The medical condition Iyer suffered generally happens when the elderly suffer a fall, KG Hospital chairman G. Bhaktavathsalam said. It could happen to others too, as a result of a minor bump on the head or due to an accident.The symptoms would be - feeling dizzy, loss of memory, nausea, numbness of feet, blurred vision, seizures or a patient could go into a coma.
