The Railway budget has focused on building capacity for the future with its investment proposals for infrastructure, according to the Coimbatore chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry. Its chairman K. Thangaraj has said in a release that the projects for port connectivity, freight corridors, container terminals and passenger amenities would go a long way in making the country’s railway network modern and efficient. With passenger and freight earnings growing at double digit rates, the Railways were able to earn a cash surplus of Rs. 25,000 crore in 2007-2008, he pointed out.
Coimbatore - The Railways did not deliver much
The confederation welcomed the partnership proposed with private sector to develop world-class stations, rolling stock and other logistics. Implementation of the IT vision would make the organisation more transparent and competitive. The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has said that though the budget had several notable features such as investment in infrastructure, IT and a long term plan, “for those in Coimbatore, the Railways did not deliver much.” There was no announcement on expediting the Coimbatore-Irugur doubling work and Coimbatore-Dindigul gauge conversion work. The region had no new rail services.
“Many of the requests made by the business and the public in the Coimbatore region have not been heeded to,” the chamber president, D. Balasundaram, said. The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association hailed the budget for several features to benefit the common man. However, there was no specific benefit for the trade and industry, especially on cargo movement. The IT initiative for railways was a welcome feature.
