Butterfly Park-cum-Garden by TNAU @ Vandalur

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here has taken up a project for setting up a Butterfly Park-cum-Garden with Insect Museum at Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) at Vandalur which is 40 km from Chennai The idea behind the project, sanctioned by the Department of Tourism and Culture, Tamil Nadu, was to generate conservation awareness among the visitors to the park, Dr.C.Ramasamy, TNAU Vice Chancellor, said in a release today.

Exhibit butterflies in the natural settings

The garden would be a facility created through careful choice of host plants and habitat so as to exhibit butterflies in the natural settings.The area would be landscaped to create different butterfly habitat such as open areas, bushes, streams, waterfalls, rock gardens and to maintain various stages of butterfies, appropriate larvae and adult host plants would be raised in the garden, he said.Entrance to the garden would be through the 'insect museum', Dr R Samiyappan, technical supervisor and Director, Centre for Plant Protection Studies, said adding the museum will have an exhibit area comprising insect exhibits representing the most common Indian species of all orders of insects both in the form of preserved specimens as well as photographs.
