Heavy Rain Lashed Coimbatore City

Providing welcome relief from rising mercury levels, heavy rain lashed Coimbatore city and rural areas of the district on Friday night.Showers continued into Saturday morning also. The downpour came after a period of hot weather for 30 to 40 days and came as a big relief to the people.An overcast sky in the evening on Friday translated into showers accompanied by gusty winds by night.Parts of the city experienced lightning and thunder, reports said.

Chinnakallar near Valparai recorded the highest rainfall of 72 m.m. Coimbatore district recorded an average highest rainfall of 364 mm.According to reports reaching the district headquarters, following is the rainfall level received (in mm) till 8 a.m. on Saturday; Coimbatore South taluk recorded 36.3, Airport 11.6, Periyanaickenpalayam 31, Agricultural University 36.5, Avanashi 28, Tirupur 14.2, Palladam 6.6, Sulur 4, Annur 9, Thondamuthur 4.3, Udumalpet 5, Pollachi 5, Valparai Taluk 22 and Valparai Parambikulam – Aliyar Project area 27.



Rainfall is likely to continue in the upper reaches of the catchments areas in Western Ghats and in areas abutting the hills, officials said.As a result of the rainfall, the authorities said that there had been a steady inflow into the catchments of the various reservoirs though not a heavy inflow.This was likely to help improve the storage, officials said.Because of the rain, some of the low lying areas experienced inundation but water level subsided by morning.

Lankar Corner bus stop and Race Course walking track as usual bore the brunt of water logging.The roadsides turned slushy posing a tough time for two-wheeler riders.Owing to rain, there were disruptions in power supply in some pockets of the city that kept the TNEB fuse call vehicles busy and its officials on their toes till morning.As a matter of abundant precaution going by the weather forecast, the district administration has put the revenue, police, fire and rescue services on high alert round-the-clock.The Public Works Department, Highways officials and TNEB officials are also on standby for relief operations.
